    Mountain views on the way

Not a full bus for this tour, only 6 people including me!

On leaving Chiang Mai, you head out in the countryside with mountain views. The road climbs, and the 1st stop is.......
    1.........Vachirathan Waterfalls, (lovely)
2....... Siriphum Falls, another lovely one.
3....... A stop at a White Karen village, (this was not a set up one)
4........ Hmong market on the side of the road which was interesting.

Lunch was included and had at the National Park Headquarters, and this was our Toilet stop as well.

Continuing on up the Mountain, we pass through lovely rainforest, but today, fog is descending down the Mountain, so views are limited.

5.......Twin Royal Chedi's honouring the King & Queen
    6......Highest spot in Thailand
    7......Rainforest walk, (stunning!)

This concluded and excellent tour, spoilt a little by the fog in one place, but enhanced by the fog at another stop, can't choose the weather!!

Our guide was lovely, informative, she bought us Lychee so we could all try it, and then shared Icecream she had bought as well!
I booked this tour through my accommodation.

    THIS TOUR WAS EXCELLENT.
Cost in 2009 was 1100t/b with Northland Tours

Doi Inthanon is a landmark national park for Thailand. It sits in the cool mountains surrounding Chiang Mai, a relief from the humidity and warmth of below. The park is one of the few places that gets cold enough in the winter to experience frost, a surprise to me when I was visiting there. But it is a solitary, gorgeous place to visit.

You wind upwards on steep hilly roads to the park, passing strawberry fields that are government supported (a benign method of stopping the opium trade... give the people something else to plant and sell) as the pine trees take over your landscape. You arrive at the park, and find lush greenery all around. The park abounds with hiking trails and bird watching opportunities, some heading off to other local villages. There are also great waterfalls to see, Mae Klang and Mae Ya. Simply gorgeous. The park holds Thailand's highest point, Doi Inthanon, which you can hike or drive to, and take a picture at the signpost.

The park is close enough for a day trip from Chiang Mai and indeed many tour companies offer tours of the area), or as a multi-day excursion. You can camp there or live in one of the simple guest houses on hand. Food and water are available during the day.

This beautiful area is to the west of Chiang Mai, and is well worth a day trip. Glorious countryside, with lovely vistas, and the best thing was I hardly saw another soul all day!
