Basket weaver by SumTingWong Pack as light as possible, carry only one bag (backpack is better) and a day pack.
If you go trekking you should have waterproof hiking boots, thick socks (you don't want to be bit by many leaches). Also sandals are a must for Chiang Mai City and the local Thai towns.
Malaria pills for farangs may be recommended if you go trekking, check it out with your local doctor. Have aspirin, bandages, iodine water purification pills, and a mini medical kit.

Sturdy and light weight backpack for trekking.
Have: mosquito repellent, rain gear if you are here from May to September (Sep. the rainiest), paper, pens, and stickers (for the local kids), long pants for entering wats, and what ever you think is comfortable. Leave a Comment

Old Korean army shirt!! by mary2u99 Light backpack for your wallet, mineral water, camera and sunscreen lotions. Sandals, flip-flops are good for city.
If you are going for trekking do bring a good walking shoe or boots, lots of mosquito repellent.( with Deet 50% or 30%). Light cotton shirt, t'shirt, shorts and bermudas.
My Korean friend was so excited when she saw this shirt. Of course I did not know why and she told me this is the shirt used by Korean army a long time ago and its strange that they sold it at the bazzar. Leave a Comment

Bring extra duffle bags so you can shop at the Night Bazaar
If you are planning to trek or go into the jungle, make sure you bring plenty of insect repellent (containing DEET), light waterproof jacket, sneakers as well as a pair of Tevas, and thin t-shirts
Make sure you bring an alarm clock and a watch. No hotels or tourist spots have clocks for some weird reason. I had to ask for wake up calls from the hotels every day because my hotel rooms did not come with any form of a clock. Leave a Comment

by M.E.R.V It does get a little chilly at night on some months of the year with temperatures dipping to a low 15 degrees celcius! A shawl or light jacket would be a good idea. With the mountains surrounding the city, the day can be quite cool as well. Leave a Comment

A small daypack for your camera, water, snacks and other miscellaneous stuff when going on day trips.
T-shirts and bermudas will pretty much do as it gets hot for most of the day. Try to bring darker coloured clothes (avoid white, cream, etc) if going for day trips that involve driving in the jungles and mountain area as it gets pretty dusty and sandy. Trekking shoes will be good as it is slippery when trekking on the sandy surface in the woods. A light jacket will be enough for those staying overnight in the villages or mountain areas. In the city, the weather will be cooler at night but not chilly.
Mosquito or insect repellent, sunblock cream, lip balm
bring enough water! Leave a Comment

Chiang Mai canal....dusk...fountain. So romantic. by Anita_Porec Light luggage. Extra bag for souvenirs.
Light clothing. Raincoat or umbrella. It rains.... Walking shows. Everything is pretty close....and the baazar is pretty big. You WILL walk a lot.
Insect Repellent, for sure. BUY tiger balm. I swear it cures everything.
Polarizing lense - the skies get pretty freaky before the rain. Also, something to cover up your equipment from the rain :)) TRIPOD. The baazar looks amaing at night and so do all the canals around the city centre.
Towel.
If you practise Yoga, no need to bring your mat unless you will do it on your own. All yoga studios provide everything you need. Leave a Comment
