The upset elephant and scared riders... by ladyleo0408, 4 more photos The Maetaeng Elephant Camp is a wonderful place to see how well-trained elephants can be. They'll perform a couple of tricks and can be really fun to watch, especially if you have never had a close encounter with an elephant before. You can buy pre-packed bananas and sugar canes to feed these animals, and get snorted at! Elephant rides are the highlight of the trip, but not if your elephant is in a grouchy mood and decides to run uphill, downhill and everywhere else (like the one I was riding)... Good thing the mahoot (elephant trainer) is kinda stern... You'll also get to ride on a ox-cart back to the start point. Address: Maetaeng Elephant Camp

Elephant Riding in Mae Taeng Elephant Park by DarkRay Forget about those places that just offer elephant shows. Mae Taeng Elephant Park is the real deal in Chiang Mai! They trained their elephants very well and each trainer definitely have a very strong bond with their charge. Before I go on further, do be advised that some animal rights groups are against the sometimes harsh methods which the elephant camp use to train their animals. So form your own opinions and decide for yourself if you want to go or not. One thing for sure though is that the tourist dollar definitely help to maintain the upkeep of the animals and while I was there, I did not see any of the harsh punishments being applied. For the elephant I rode, its trainer could amazingly, just control it by his voice command. That is how he could help us the photo shown without causing a small traffic jam behind us as the elephant was moving along to his command. The entire event started at 9am by viewing how the trainers bath their elephants, followed by a short segment showcasing some unusual skills of the elephants, such as kicking a soccerball and painting. Then it is a 45 minutes ride on the elephant to Lisu Village (an entirely fake high-hill tribes village consisting of nothing but gift shops), where you will then take a 30 minutes ox-cart ride back to the camp for your buffet lunch at their restaurant. After lunch, you then have the option of whether you want to take a bamboo rafting ride as well. More information about this excursion can be found here. Pang Chang, Chiang Mai by Wann Pang Chang or Elephant Camp i visited located in Mae Rim District on the route Mae Rim-Samoeng up on mountain. The famous one where tourists visit is Mae Sa but I visited another one further away, sorry can not remember name of that camp but it was more natural, no elephant show, only look at them in natural behavior. People can do elephant trek there. Leave a Comment Directions: Mae Rim-Samoeng Route, Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai

me - washing an elephant at the nature park by Anita_Porec Note - you will not ride the elephants or be able to buy paintings drawn by them .... BUT - you WILL have the time of your life!!! The Elephant Natural Park is the best thing we have experianced in Chiang Mai. When we came to the city, we figured we will mosl likely take one of the trekking tours offered in the city. After a few days - EVERYONE we met has recommanded that we take the day trip to the Natural Park instead of doing the trek/ride/circus show. It was absolutely amazing!! We got to feed the elephants one on one ....a few times a day + we also got to swim with them and wash them in the river twice durig the day. You get to learn so much about elephants and the way they live, as well as the torture they go through to get trained for the trekking parks. Most of the elephants in this park have been rescued from trekking parks where they have been hurt or deemed unuseful by owners. The Nature Elephant Park however is not out to close these trekking parks, but just to give people an alternative and more natural way to interract with elephants and to try and show the public that elephants can be trained without being beaten or mulled. PLEASE NOTE >>>> since this park has gained recognition by PETA, National Geographic, BBC, etc... there have been trekking camps opening up under the names of Natural Elephants ... or Nature Park or similar, just to attract people. Make sure you are going to the elephantnaturepark.org There are several offices in the city that can book this tour for you. Leave a Comment

My wife and some of the ladies decided to do their own thing whilst the men went to an orchid nursery. They hired an open air taxi for the day and went to the zoo, elephant farm and Hill Tibe village plus lunch for approx 300 baht each. The elephant ride was for approximately an hour, exciting but most enjoyable. We do not know where it was, but some km outside Chiang Mai, just get a quote from the taxi drivers outside your hotel, and then bargain. Leave a Comment

Ronnie & Me on our Bamboo Raft by BorderHopper With our elephant trek came a short excursion on a bamboo raft down the Ping river. It was perfect for the kids as it wasn't a white water trip down a raging river. The Ping River is a slow moving river that allowed us a gentle trip along the banks. We saw elephants & jungle scenery. The kids enjoyed it as well! Leave a Comment Directions: Mae Ping Elephant Camp

The Mae Sa Elephant camp is a well-known elephant camp situated not far away from the heart of Chiang Mai. Upon arriving you can choose to go for an elephant ride or proceed to the show area to wait for the elephants' performance. The show was very interesting; the elephants perfomed tricks like playing football, blowing harmonicas but the best part was the artistic pieces they produced by holding brushes with their trunks. The art they produced were selling for a minimum of ard 1000-1500 baht! Leave a Comment

Reminds me of the colonial days in India =) by BorderHopper Since Elephant trekking is set up for tourists they've got a system to get a little more money out of you along the way. It's not really a bad thing but how can you say "No" to a lady trying to sell you bananas to feed your elephant? Several times along the path we were stopped to buy some sort of food for our "Chang" and of course we did. I guess its their own version of an elephant fast food drive-thru! Leave a Comment

We had a fun day out at the Mae Taeng Elephant Park. We got there early enough to feed the elephants then watch them bathing in the river before they put on a show for us. Some of those elephants are so clever. We were fascinated watching one that could throw a ball in the air with his trunk then kick it with his back foot before it hit the ground! After the entertainment we got to ride through the forest on the elephants, before checking out the Lisu villager's tourist stalls. Then it was into the ox cart for a bumpy ride to the lunch spot. The buffet lunch was actually very nice. It was an open air restaurant on the side of the river. Leave a Comment Directions: North of Chiang Mai

Maesa Elephant is ISO9001:2000 certified under services and entertainment. It opens daily from 7am till 2:30pm. A place not to be missed while you are in Chiang Mai. Elephant Show Time:- 8am, 9:40am & 1:30pm Elephant Show Programme:- Welcome guests by elephant parade Demostration of the various ways of getting on / down elephant Musical talent show & dancing Demonstration on how elephant sleeps Elephant football league (soccer show) Elephant artist show. The only place where elephants paint abstract & realistic style (must see) Traditional Thai massage show Elephant competition - sticks pick up game Dart game show by elephant Logging show & lumber work show Note: Elephant bathing at the two bathing areas (at both sides of the bridge) before the elephant show at the show ground. Check out those elephant keepers standing by & holding a basket. They are actually catching elephant dung floating in the river. Really an amazing sight ! You can also feed them a comb of bananas. After that, walk straight and climb up the steps to the show ground and find yourself a nice spot to enjoy some elephant stunts. The show is in overall far more superior than the elephant show in Bangkok Safari World. Elephants here are more well-trained and talented. Moreover, it's a real elephant camp or training school set in a natural forest ground and not in enclosure / zoo. If you have watched the elephant show / ride on a elephant here, you can give them a miss in your next trip to Bangkok Safari World. Trust me! Elephant's paintings are up for sale at THB3,000. Wow... really a masterpiece that can fetch good price. Although the paints are mixed by the keeper, the elephant's strokes are so stable & delicate. Ellie, kudos! Don't miss the once-in-a-lifetime experience of riding on an elephant and trekking into the jungle. You will be thrilled ! Grasp the handle bar firmly, it's like a roller coaster ride. 30 minutes of elephant ride costs THB400. Your photo with elephant dung paper photo frame selling for THB300. Leave a Comment
