Visit to the Snake Farms
If you are visiting the Mae Taeng Elephant Park from Chiang Mai City, chances are that your tour guide will bring you to the Mae Sa Snake Farm as well on the way back from the park. It may be a little touristy, but it is really quite interesting since it is after all, it is the largest snake centre in Northern Thailand.
The show consist of their snake handlers showing their competence in handling Thai cobras, pythons, and some sort of tree jumping snakes. It was an entertaining show and they even showed how they extracted the snake venom from the Thai cobra.
Being a tourist spot, there will be ample opportunities for you to take a photo with a python as well for those interested ;-)
Show times are at 11.30am, 2.15pm, and 3.30pm daily and the entry is 200 baht.

CRUEL, CRUEL, CRUEL!
It is hard to imagine snakes being mistreated like this. After all, they are not difficult to take care of. But this place blew my mind in the worst possible way. The snake show was one thing: loud, obnoxious and absolutely disturbing. The guys throw the snakes around like they are pieces of rope. They extract the venom with so much force that all you can see is blood rushing into the cup and they probably do this to the poor snake an unhealthy number of times a day. After the show, we looked at the snakes in their "enclosures" and we were just appalled. These snakes are BEYOND MISTREATED. They are literally just thrown into a cage with dirt and nothing more. Piles of snakes in one cage where we saw one dead and rotting in the corner. One python's face was so scarred you couldn't even see it's eyes. A man holding a python was squeezing and twisting it's head so hard, it looked like it's bottom jaw was about to fall off which is completely unnecessary it was just DISTURBING. We left nearly in tears. PLEASE HELP EXPLOIT THIS CRUEL PLACE AND SHUT IT DOWN!
