Woon Being Blessed by DarkRay Rising 1676 meters above the city the Chiang Mai, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, is one of the most important religious destination in Chiang Mai. Originally built in the year 1386 by King Keuna the Great, the story behind its construction of tells of a white elephant (which only a king can own) ascending the mountains with one-half of a sacred buddha relic. This temple was built where the white elephant made its final resting place and was named after hermit Suthep Reusi, who had lived there 1,300 years ago. It is widely said that if you did not visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, then you had not visited Chiang Mai. According to my guide, if you had not been blessed by the holy monk in the temple, then you had not been to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Visiting the temple is easy, as there are various public transport options available to take you to the base of the temple. A songthew (red taxi) will be able to take you up 1 way to the temple from Chiang Mai Zoo or University at only 30 baht per person. Tuk tuks are not allowed up Doi Suthep. If you do not want to climb the 306 steps up to the temple from its base, tram rides are available to take you up as well as down. The basic admission charge is 30 baht for any foreign visitor or 50 baht with a 2-way tram ride . Due to the high altitude of the temple, the air there is cool and very refreshing. On a good clear day, you can also have a good aerial view of the city from the lookout terrace around the temple. Along the way up or down, there are 2 other smaller temples (tied to the white elephant legend as well) which you can visit as well as the royal family's winter residence, the Phu Phing Palace which you can visit on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Official Holidays, when the royal family is not in residence. The Huai Kaeo Falls are in the area as well. Leave a Comment

I think this place is a major attraction of Chiang Mai. I 've been there many times. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is located up on the mountain, 3,520 feet above sea level and about 15 km. from Chiang Mai City. The Temple is approached on foot by climbing a steep Naga staircase comprising 290 steps, take time for me to reach the top :) The temple’s pagoda contains holy Buddha relics, and attracts Buddhist pilgrims from all over the world throughout the year. Don't forget to taking some pictures of Chiang Mai city from the area of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple, there's a viewpoint area. Over forested mountain, you can see a view of Chiang Mai city and surrounding countryside. Dresscode, entering the temple, you need to dress pants (short not allow), anyway they have some cloth to wear cover. Leave a Comment Address: Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai

There is a saying, if you have not been to Doi Suthep, you have not been to Chiang Mai. Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep is located on the north west part of the city and is the most famous temple in Chiang Mai. From the city, take the songthaew to outside the Chiang Mai University (THB20) where you may transfer to another songthaew up (THB40) to the windy hill of Doi Suthep. From where you alight, you could climb 309 steps to reach the pagodas or take the cable car for a return trip of THB20. Entry to the temple costs THB30 for foreigners. Doi Suthep offers a superb views over the city of Chiang Mai on a clear day. Once inside the temple grounds; visitors must take off their shoes and must be appropriately dressed. The stupa pagoda or golden chedi is the most photographed monument of Doi Suthep. It is covered with engraved gold plate and stands at 79 feet high and 39 feet across at its base. Wat Phra That by xinxin The joyful part of this Wat Phra That trip, is not only from the Wat itself, but also the drive up to Doi Suthep Mountain. Rent a scoter, or a bike, drive to the top, you will get a peaceful ride with cool air and lovely view. There are a few "view points", where you could have a picnic, or view the whole Chiang Mai. The road is good, the air is fresh, with lots of bamboo and couple waterfalls..... When you end up in the front of these steps, you are close to the Wat then. Good to walk a bit after a long ride..... Leave a Comment

white elephant by i-s-a Situated at the top of the mountain, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is one of the most revered temples in Chiang Mai. According to our tour guide, the founding of the temple was based on a legend. The story started when a glowing Buddha relic has magically reproduced just before it was about to be enshrined at Wat Suan Dok. The new relic was placed at the back of a sacred white elephant. This elephant was left roaming until and climbed to the top of Suthep Mountain. After trumpeting three times, it turned around three times, knelt down and died. The people took it as a sign that this is where the relic should be placed. King Ku Na built the original of the chedi on Doi Suthep at the end of 14th century. Leave a Comment

Me in the Doi Suthep by Rojo72 The Doi Suthep is a Wat high on the hills above Chiang Mai. It is said to contain some relics of Buddha in a shrine in the center. Remeber to wear clothes that cover your knees. They've got staff that gives you a cloth to hide them with if you don't though. But I borrowed one and ended up being giggled at by the Thai young girls. Now that did only happen to me once in all of Thailand so I must have looked really silly. It was hard getting any good shots of the whole Wat with my camera so you'll have to put up with my small piece of it. To get to the wat we took a tuk-tuk to a street just below the beginning of the hill where there were Songtaews who brought people up to the Wat. Only...you have to wait until the Songtaew is full before it leaves. Leave a Comment Directions: On the hill above Chiang Mai.

Wat Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai by Myndo Maybe the most famous Wat or Temple in Northern Thailand. It is located on the Hill next to Chiang Mai. In the night it is lighted - first time I saw it, I thought it was a plane landing... The Temple is in 1000 m.ü.m. (metres above sea level). Most of it can today be made by the road that was built in 1934. The last part is either taking the stairs on the left side (287 steps) or the cable car on the right side. Cost: 30 Baht. The temple is glowing in the sun - what is no wunder, it has been freshly treated with gold only 3 months ago. There would be a super view over Chiang Mai from up here - if it wasn´t so misty down there. There are many of these bells hanging att he outer walls of the temple. The sign "don´t push" means you should not push the whole bell, but you are free to ring it by using the thing that hangs in the midlle (now what is the name of that?). Ringing these bells is supposed to bring luck. To get into the inner part of the temple you have to take off your shoes. You can buy some lotus flower at the entrance. Interesting to see was the mixture of tourists and worshipping Thais here. Leave a Comment
