  • Popular attractions in Chiang Rai include Chiang Saen, an ancient capital facing Laos, and the mountaintop Wat Phra That Doi Tung, and seven major, once-itinerant hill tribes of Tibeto- Burman origin ý ý the Meo, Lisu, Lahu, Yao, Akha, Lawa and Karen. Visitors to Chiang Rai also have a wide range of hiking and trekking options to choose from. Two to six day treks take visitors through forested mountains and high meadows in the lower extremities of Himalayan foothills. The best time to visit Chiang Rai is in winter (November to February) when the air is cool and refreshing and beautiful flowers are blooming.

I sat around for a while and listened to the Monks chanting at sunset at the Wat Phra Kaew temple here in Chiang Rai...

It really wasn't very hard to pick out who was the apprentice here. While all the other monks were staring forward chanting away, only one was using a crib sheet to follow along.... (Orange robe, shaved head, read left hand side, can't miss him...)

Well someday, I'm sure he will be leading the chants....

The silver monk mobile is parked just behind the famou s Wat Phra Kaew temple in Chiang Rai. Full scale and pure silver, it is complete with steering wheel, spoilers, and a pagoda.

This just goes to show that it is no sin to occasionally enjoy the pleasures of this world before you depart for a better place...

Chiang Khong was my gateway to Laos: I must admit I did not do it justice.. I walked up and down the main street once and then headed back to my guesthouse - and stared at the mekong river - knowing Laos was just on the other side, and the following day I would finally be there.

A simple memory: not having liked thailand so much I was really delighted to know it would be my last night there - and that the following night I would be speding it happily in Laos. I had high expectations, and I was not disappointed!

Chiang Rai is in norther Thailand... it's supposed to be a good base to go out to some hill-tribes, but I decided not go - after hearing a report of people in a Akha tribe being very rude to some visitors. It's also supposed to be a good base to visit the GoldenTriangle, but to be fair it's not really an impressive sight. As for Chiang Rai town itself, I did not like it: I found no evident charm in the (lack of) architecture, and the temples were just ok: not ugly, but not memorable either. In other words: I cant think of a good reason to recommend Chiang Rai

Leaving it - and knowing I would never - ever - come back...

Sop Ruak is just a bus stop... a tourist bus stop... if it weren't for the Golden Triangle signs (yes, plenty of them - too many to be original) it probably wouln't have a reason to exist. It's basically a road flanked by several stalls selling all sorts of tacky souvenirs, a few simple and deserted eateries... and not much else... 2 nice temples (deserted) and an opium museum (not really packed). Welcome to the Thailand that should not exist

Probably getting out of it... except the temple visit - the rest of the "road" (one can't call it town) is as depressing as it can get... boring, too.

Thai visa run from Chiang Rai
  • By seagypsy on June 4, 2009

  • It's faster, cheaper, and easier just to go by bus to Mae Sai and cross over into Myanmar/Burma at Tachilek. You'll get a day pass for U$5 (or maybe it's U$10) and you can turn around again back into Thailand but you'll only get 15 days when re-entering Thailand by land. No need for a Myanmar visa and far cheaper than crossing into Laos at Chiang Khong to Huay Xai since the Lao visa is usually around U$35. If memory serves, the bus takes about an hour to Mae Sai.
