As part of the show performed by the elephants at the National Elephant Institute, you can have the opportunity to buy the elephant flower paintings. The drawing instruments are paints brushes, paper or cloth. Elephants are able to draw because of their flexible trunks which can clasp a brush that has been dipped into the paint by the mahout (handler). Then, the elephants paint on the paper or cloth using their "imagination". The paintings are then available to buy from the shop but they don't come cheap!
Shows: 10am & 11am. Admission: 50 baht.
That's large book shop in Lampang (probably the largest one) and has also books and research papers (such as on Mekong) on region in English plus a lot of maps. Seems to be popular one as there are always many costumers (mostly Thai students).
What to buy:
maps, books
Lampang plaza is place for buying local ceramics (one of the things which Lampang is famous for), Thai handicrafts and a place to get on the horse carriage. It's open every day untill about 4 pm so it can be good alternative to night market which is open on weekends only. If you like to shop for symbolic presents for your friends there are nice small ceramic animals to buy such as cobra, dog, cat, owl, pig... Price of each one of them were about 10 THB. Larger items such as dishes are cheap too (try to get one bowl with a cock since it symbolises Lampang) and worth to buy (if you bother to carry fragile things).
What to buy:
animals and bowls
That is the best place for shopping in Lampang if you're looking for clothes, foods, snacks, antiques, local handicrafts and arts, music and other. It is open on weekends only (Saturday and Sunday), from about 6 pm on - and it can get really crowded then. Sometimes there will be a concert and you'll hear some nice music of local musicians, and the Talad Kao street itself is lovely and picturesque place to visit even before the market starts with lots of old and architectually interesting wooden houses (Chinese, Lanna, Burmese, Thai house mix).
What to buy:
Get unique wooden postcards and badges from girls and a woman who sell them on Sundays; maybe you'd like to buy yourself model of Northen Thai house; maybe you fancy lovely hand-made cotton toys from another girl; old coins and banknotes, beautiful wowen textiles or minority clothes, modern t-shirts from Lampang, art photos by creative Lampang youth, hand made honey soaps, delicious snacks and drinks, mmmm....
