Many roads around Mae Sai will lead you somewhere "off the beaten path". In our explorations around Mae Sai by motorbike we fond hidden lakes perfect for swimming, deep caves, remote villages, and border markers indicating the boundry between Myanmar and Thailand. In the photo we were on our way to Sop Ruak, Thailand which is about an hours ride outside of Mae Sai. This ride will take you to the Mekong River and the Laos border. It's a must see!

This remote town on the mountains is famous as a refuge place for the Kumingtang army when they retreated into Indo-China during the war with the communists. Till today, many Chinese descendents of the army still lives in this town. Another famous thing about this town is watching the Thai sakura flowers blooming.

While visiting the Golden Triangle from Maesai, you should remember to visit this island on the Laos side of the Mekong River border but you do not require a passport to visit it ! There are some Laos houses here, plus sourvenier shops and a Laos flag as well.

The Golden Triangle is the meeting point of three countries - Thailand, Myanmar and Laos, separated by the Mekong River. It is a short drive from the town of Mae Sai, the northernmost town in Thailand. On the Myanmar side, you can see a red-roof building complex which is the Paradise Casino. Thais cross over to the Myanmar side by speedboat to gamble at the casino, which is purportedly owned by rich Myanmese drug lords.
