"Loy" means "to float" and "Krathong" means a lotus-shaped vessel made of banana leaves. The Krathong usually contains a candle, three incense sticks and some flowers. In the past, people believed that they should ask forgiveness to the Goddess of Water because they polluted Her. Thus, in order to thank the river for its kindness, by moonlight, people light the candles and incense sticks, make a wish and launch their Krathong on canals, rivers or even small ponds. It is believed that the Krathongs can carry away sins and bad luck.

Loy Krathong is one of the biggest Thai festivals. It is held on the full moon of the 12th lunar month. The main festivities are held in Sukhothai, so I was very lucky to be there on that night. I had a great time celebrating with the Thai people, watching the Krathongs floating, enjoying the fireworks and the vendors' food.
On this picture, you can see my Krathong floating.

I was quite interested in watching the locals fishing in the ponds dotted around Sukhothai. They stood on the banks, threw a wide heavy net into the water then waded in to see what they had caught.

We had to get a picture of this number plate - imagining how much it would cost to buy this at home!
