SONGTHEAW FROM MAE SOD
Songtheaws leave every hour between Umphang and Mae Sod in both directions from early morning for the 6 hour trip through magnificent mountainous scenery. You will be unlikely to catch one after lunch, so best try for early morning. A songtheaw is a vehicle with two rows of seats st the back, and sometimes stools or a bench in the center to accommodate the passengers, while luggage is stored on the roof. About the halfway point in the journey the driver will stop for a 30 minute break which will give you enough time to grab a snack.
Unfortunately one cannot continue south from Umphang so it is necessary to return by the same route to Mae Sod.

When off the beaten path, make sure you try riding elephants, it is a unique experience. I would not plan on doing it for more than a couple of hours however, since it can become VERY uncomfortable.
