Garden for a Special Lady

by AlbuqRay

Thailand has a very special King. He is now the longest reigning monarch in the world and is beloved by his people. He was not supposed to be King but his older brother was killed in an accident. He was trained as an engineer and has inventions. One of the people who helped make him special was his mother, Her Royal Highness Somdej Phra Sri Nakarindra Boromarajjonnani, Mae Fah Luang. He certainly inherited her practicality and modesty. One of her former summer residences (she passed away a few years ago) is the Doi Tung Palace, located north of Chiang Rai near Mae Sai on the Doi Tung limestone outcrop (1800 m or 5900 ft). Her home there is said to have been constructed from wood from shipping pallets. Hard to tell if that is true. It is such a beautiful place. The residence is complemented by the spectacular Mae Fah Luang botanical garden, which was started in 1992. The garden elevation...

Surreal Life

by fullcirclea

Place : The Rock Bar Country: Thailand City:Rai Lei- an island with no motor transportWe walked a long windy hill that circled around and around toarrive at what felt like the middle of no where surrounded by tall, tallcliffsso hidden if you didnt know it was there you could never guess. Iimagine you could only see it from the sky. As the sun went downthe lights came on from an out door bar that had only a partial roof (no walls) . The rest of the place ( chairs, tables) was amoung cliffs, grass , trees and plants . It felt as if we were in a movie on a desserted island and I knew I could never explain how surreal itfelt. My pictures dont even do it justice.

Try the waterfall and the "mummified monk"

by mcgruff75044

Ther is a waterfall that is worth walking up to. It is at a place you can take elephant rides. My companion was THai and knew better than to get on an elephant so I was with her. THere is alsi a "Mummified Monk" Shrine that had a monk dating back close to the time of the Budhha. Take of you r shoes, bow ewith burning incense and give a small contribution. If there is a monk there ask for his blessing.

Erawan Waterfalls

by supabenji

Hiking and discovering the Erawan Waterfalls is an experience that you will not forget. It's a 2h journey by bus to reach them but you will enjoy the fresh air the forest will provide you and of course swimming among fishes in this very very cool water. Bear in mind you'll need the whole day if you really want to enjoy it fully. Take the bus at the Kanchanaburi bus station. It's one of the oldest bus you can find in town but you'll feel safe though.

Bang Pa-in

by traveldave

Located north of Bangkok, and just south of Ayutthaya, Bang Pa-in is a collection of palaces and pavilions once used by the royal family as a summer retreat. The buildings at Bang Pa-in date from the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century reigns of King Rama V and King Rama VI.Visitors can tour the ornate Chinese-style palace (pictured here) in which the kings stayed during visits.

See Ayuthaya...

by GenkiMac

See Ayuthaya...which is not off the beaten track until you walk a little further, after seeing the ruins, explore the town on 'foot'!! It has a lovely feel and not many people seem to do it so you feel like you have found something no-one else knows about even though it's well advertised and known.

Sangklaburi (near to the border with Myanmar) is about 3hr drive from Kanchanaburi (though this does depend on your driver....!) It offers some of the most beautiful sunsets, anywhere, and also has some amazing temples to explore.

Trat

by AndreSTGT

For travelers who are on their way to/from Ko Chang or Sihanoukville (Cambodia) it is worthwhile to spend some time in the pleasant provincial town of Trat. There's not much in terms of sightseeing but the town has a very good night market (delicious food) and old teak houses along a peaceful canal.August 20002005 update :Not much has changed in Trat, a few more guesthouses, farang restaurants and internet cafes, of course, but the old town with its wooden houes is still quite a peaceful and relaxed place to spend a day on your way to/from Cambodia.Last visit : March 2005

Ko Lanta - untouched nature

by gabyne

The island of Ko Lanta lies south of Phuket and Krabi, quite close to the province of Trang. It can be reached by ferry from Phuket, Krabi or Phi Phi island or by car. There is not that much tourism so far, you'll find very long, deserted beaches and lots of nature.
