don't bother with much!

by LINSY

hand luggage and an empty suitcase we over-packed completely and none of our clothing was suitable for that heat. coming from south africa we thought we would be ok with our regular summer clothes - no way! simple, loose fitting cotton is the way to go. be warned though, a regular sized 14 western girl may have some trouble finding sizes. the hawkers kept shouting TRIPLE XTRA LARGE as we walked past - embarrassing! That said, us regular sized 14 gals still had trouble hauling all our shopping back home.......... prescriptions, mozzie repellant and sunblock! we developed all our pics there on the last day and it cost us a third of what it does back home! hairdryers! what were we thinking????!!! your hair will have no choice but to go au natural - enjoy and use a gel.......

Not so much

Few things, you may buy almost everything there. Use sandal, closed shoes only for trekking. For woman there are a lot of shops that sells fine dress. Long troser only in some elegant restaurant and for some places like Grand Palace. Shirt are chepear here than in other western countries. You may found common mark of tioletry in all supermarket or in Seven Eleven (open 24 h/daily). You nedd some antibiotics for intestinal disease or cold caused by a/c, but you may found them in every pharmacy. The best thing to do is vaccination before the travel:1) typhus and paratyphus (3 pastille): take one on alternate days2) malaria is overestimates, you nedd medication inly if you go in rural areas (the best is mefluochine)3) rabies because there are a lot of dogs without any control4) tetanus. All these vaccination are only precautions if something go wrong and you are not obliged to do.

Traveling in Southern Thailand

by bulldogtwo

Back pack and if needed, small duffle bag Couple pair of shorts, sandals, tennis shoes, 3-4 t-shirts, 1 dress shirt, 1 pair lightweight dress pants, sunblock small med kit, anitceptic, band aids. You can buy everything else you need cheaply, if needed. small digital and couple extra cd's. use you shorts or swim suit, t's and sandals. The short answer is yes. But I would recommend that you do not unless you absolutely have to. Are you flying in from Bangkok? Or are you returning to Phuket from Krabi or Phi Phi? If yes to either then you can put you bags in storage at the hotel you may be staying at in Bangkok or Phuket until you return. Of course I am guessing as to why you want or need to travel with both bags. But, travelling light is always better and I am sure that you can get by with a lot less. The hotel may even charge you a bit but most will not, especially if you are going...

Travel Books to Consider

by HasTowelWillTravel

Rather than the LP guides, I used the Let's Go Thailand book when I went to Thailand. I found it to be a much more thorough book, with more connection to an individual traveler. I really enjoyed using this book. Also the DK Eyewitness Thailand book. It is more descriptive than most travel books, with lots of diagrams and historical tidbits which make it more interesting. It is thinner on hotels and restaurants, but makes up for it in beautiful photos and descriptions. For an introduction to life in Thailand, there is a good collection of short stories by a Thai author that reflect some of the issues that are prevalent in modern Thailand. It is called Sightseeing, and is by Rattawut Lapcharoensap. Definitely check it out, its a great collection.

Pack Smart not Hard?!

by pingguo

Definitely a sturdy backpack with lots of pockets. Although you can buy great fake brand name backpacks on the Kho San Road when you get there (only thing is it might fall apart) Sensible shoes for walking. You can buy flip-flops and sandals when you get there for next to nothing. Don't bother bringing too many clothes or buying anything in advance. You will want to buy the cool t-shirts and clothes for sale there anyway and end up having to throw stuff away. Any prescription medication you might need and rehydration salts (although I never used the ones I brought) Pharmacies in Thailand are very good. You need mozzie repellent and sunblock but can easily get them there. Nacy Chandler's maps of Bangkok and Chiangmai are beautifully illustrated and a great source of information.http://www.nancychandler.net/ If you want to bring a guide book and are worried about weight you can usually...

The less the better

by XBlanka

The less you take the better – some t-shirts and light trousers and that’s it. You don’t need any special shoes if you want to stay only on the islands. Flip-flops are enough. At some places during night there are mosquitos so some repellent is useful. The pharmacies in Thailand are on very high level so if get hurt don’t worry – you can buy everything there. Light t-shirts and trousers Mosquito repellent, desinfection

Definately need insect repellant!!

by Andi9

I took a small case & could have packed less, had a backpack but only for carrying bottles of water. Do take light cotton clothing to keep cool & suitable attire for visits to Temples & Palaces - no sting strap tops or sleeveless tanks & shorts allowed, you can hire or borrow clothing for a fee on the day tho. 3/4 trousers were acceptable & 3/4 sleeve tops & t shirts. Also shoes need to be removed for some temples. I did take a small first aid kit but really the repellant is the most important item to keep the bugs at bay! Did have a small bottle of liquid sanitizer/cleaner, but never needed it. Make sure you take the appropriate travel pugs if you are taking your camera & phone chargers. Plus any spare batteries, I had two & needed to charge only one while away & took over 400 photos. Most places have pools so take your tog, whatever you swim in & enjoy :-) Had water bottles with me...

Single serving medicines

by globally79

I would definitely advise bringing a few single serving packets of your usual over-the-counter remedies to Thailand, especially if you plan on sampling the street food. Allergy meds, tylenol and pepto will come in handy when you can't find a pharmacy. After a particularly nasty bout of indigestion from some deceptively good street food, I ran from one 7-11 to another looking for immodium or something similar and came up empty. I found a pharmacy minutes before they closed, the lady behind the counter spoke no English, but finally understood "Immodium." Funny story, but next time I'll just pack my own.
