Packing List

You should have just three things to carry, a rucksack, a holdal bag (for quick access to stuff) and a bottle of water. Forget sweaters, you won't need them even in the north. Decent sandals are essential. If mozzie bites really annoy you then take plenty of deet protection for yer legs and ankles. Apart from a decent camera, you dont need much, remember, you do have a large memory. Watch out for glass and things on some of the more touristy beaches and if you swim out a bit, watch for boats and jet-ski's. Just a very, very open mind.

my first advice is to bring all the backpacks and bags that you need from your home country. I mean, don't just assume you will buy a cheap imitation and be happy with it. I know someone who left with a small bag and thought she'd buy a fake backpack as soon as she got to Bangkok. She did, it was not exactly cheap to be a fake and, on top of this, 5 days later it gloriously fell apart. whatever you think it's suitable - i'd avoid mini-skirts and tank tops if you're going anywhere outside beach resorts it's a necessity if you are planning on going hiking, but it will also come in handy at many restaurants's toilets or bus stations' toilets. Don't assume you'll just find it (normally you don't) a padlock can come in handy

Take an empty pack. 2 pairs of shorts.2 T-shirts Insect repellants Everything is for sale and can be bartered down to very reasonable prices. It's very hot so just take minimal amounts of equipment and buy any extras required as you go along.

Fins, umbrellas and suncream

by Vickster

A rucksack is probably the best piece of luggage you can have with you. Ideal for taking towels, suncream, swimwear and cameras on day trips to the neighbouring islands. A raincoat is useful if you're visiting anywhere close to the rainy season between April and October, as is an umbrella - but do watch out for potential lightning strikes!Other than that, Thailand is hot all year round so cool, lightweight clothing is best. And if you're thinking of snorkelling near the reefs, suitable, waterproof footwear is advisable to avoid injury. Although mosquitos are not prevalent in most areas of Thailand, there are some around so a repellent is a wise precaution.Suncream is a must as the country is near the equator allowing for a fierce sun as is plenty of aftersun!!! Whatever photographic equipment you own, it's worth taking it to Phi Phi island to take shots of the often elusive picture of...

Powerpoints and more!

by M.E.R.V

People are always bringing too much clothes to Thailand...DONT! There are many street bazaars and night markets to go to and u can buy clothes in the bundle like no body's business...be good at bargaining though. Need tips on bargaining? Ask me... Light clothings...it is really hot and humid especially may-july. If you are thinking of travelling to northern parts of Thailand(Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai)bring a light coat, it gets chilly sometimes at night. If u forget to bring ur toothbrush, Boots has also everything u need! Electronic products and optical items are expensive...bring your own otherwise! Power points only cater to two-pin plugs, British adapters are out!

What To Wear : Light, loose cotton clothing is best. Nylon should be avoided. Sweaters are needed during the cool season evenings or if visiting mountainous areas or national parks. Jackets and ties are required in a few restaurants and nightclubs. Neat clothes are required for entering temples or palaces.

Climate : Thailand lies within the humid tropics and remains hot throughout the year. Average temperatures are about 29oC, ranging in Bangkok from 35oC in April to 17oC in December. There are three seasons: the cool season (November to February), the hot season (April to May), and the rainy season (June to October), though downpours rarely last more than a couple of hours. We enjoy a tropical climate with 3 distinct seasons - hot from March through May, wet from June to September, and cool from October through February. The average annual temperature is 28o C (83o F), ranging from in Bangkok, for example, from 30 C in April to 25 C in December. CLICK HERE FOR MORE

Pack light - chances are you won't need much as it's hot most of the time (although it can get chilly in the evenings in the far north in the cool season). Take shoes you can walk in - Thailand is not a place for impractical shoes! Thailand is a really cheap place for clothes, so if you like shopping you could take next to nothing and buy stuff here. Sunscreen and mosquito repellent - you'll need both! Easy to obtain locally, if you forget them, though. Your ATM card! I've given up taking traveller's cheques and now rely on the ATM network - it's been fine so far. If you're going somewhere a bit remote then traveller's cheques can be a good backup as money changers are often in places that ATMs are yet to reach. To check out how much your own currency is worth in Thailand, check out the current rates offered by Bangkok Bank (one of the bigger local operators) via this...

Umbrella for the storm.Sun block for the sun. Alternatively, to make yourself more comfortable in the hot and humid climate, buy a type of powder from the shops in Thailand and apply all over your body. It cools you down. Beware, not too much else it gets too cooling!
