If you're traveling light and like to shop, I highly recommend bringing a second bag for all your purchases. Although lots of things are cheap in Thailand, shipping isn't, and you're better off having to check a bag at the airport than missing out on all those great deals. A fleece jacket - northern Thailand was much colder at night than I'd expected and I almost froze in Chiang Khong in February.

Honestly, the best packing advice I can give you is... Do not pack anything. Throw on a Tee Shirt and leave your coat with a friend at the airport. As you land in BKK go left to the line of the metered cabs, ignore all the touts and say… “Take me to Khao San Road and Put the meter on please, hum… the meter on please” Honestly that is all you need to do. Once in Khao San Road you will be able to buy all the luggage and cloth you need for 1/10 or less of the price at home. You will be happy, it will have all the labels you like, like Calvin, Polo, Camel, you name it. And if you see a great backpack that has a label of Jane Sport and you wanted a North Face, Just ask for it. They have it in the back – yes, it is the same backpack. Mai pan rai, will keep you happy. I know you will not follow this advice, and you will pack everything but the kitchen sink, and you will get to Khao San Road...

To take or not to take

Take an extra bag along that is empty as you might want to fill it with things you buy there. Or buy a bag there - MBK in Bangkok has lots of luggage and prices can be good. Also, the night bazaar in Chiangmai has lots of luggage to choose from. Top brand names (unless they are fakes) will be more expensive here than they are in your country. If you are big (tall or fat), take clothing along with you as it can be hard to find off the rack there. You might think about having clothing made for you while there because it can be quite reasonable (but not in places like Hua Hin, Phuket, etc.) The Sukhumvit area has lots of tailor shops to choose from, so have a look around and compare. And take an article of clothing along that you like and they will copy it for you - the shops are very good at that.Definitely bring your good shoes with you if you have special or large feet. If you want...

Water temperature: 80 degrees.January is the height of the cool season; considering that it can still hit 95 degrees, this is the month to be here.

It's always hot, there's no need for warm clothing. Umbrella for the rain. Cheaper to buy everything there, and don't forget to get some 'Prickly Heat' at the store. It's a white powder that will cool you down, dry you off and relieve any itching caused by bugs!

Any bag will do really... if you're doing a holiday like i did which was really low impact and mostly leisurely...we've brought small cabin bags to large hard case ones on our travels to Thailand. It depends on what you want to buy from Chatuchak... we bought hanging lights/lamps and standing ones too. These were packed by the shops in Chatuchak with bubble padding in a box. There was no problem checking it through and marked as Glass-Fragile. We had to unpack one as when it went through the X-Ray machine, the customs office found it rather suspicious looking... it was one of the lamps! :) Good walking shoes again.Teva's recommended for beach to road wear.Light clothing, though it can get quite cool in the evenings in Bangkok in the later months of the year... but if you come from a temperate country -- it'd be more hot than cool for you! ;p You don't really need to bring anything...

Resort If you go to Koh Chang think seriously about bringing profylactics. This is apparently malaria country. You can buy great mosquito repellents on the island. Bring you own roles of film. And lots of them.
