Getting Fitted at a Tailors by Homanded Outdoor markets throughout Asia (specially Thailand) are fun, challenging, economical ways of purchasing your souveniers and, even essentials while you're visiting. Nothing adds more to the flavour of coming to Thailand than immersing yourself in the market scene of which there is practically one designed to cater to each of your specific needs. Hard barganing is a must AND expected. Rule of thumb is ALWAYS start at 1/4 to 1/3 less than they initially offer you. Some of the following we figured out after a couple of days: Vendors will be vying for your attention: The sounds of Halooooo Mr....Cheap...just looky...." are forever etched in our minds. They will be trying to get you toenter their "space" in the market. It is not until you actually enter, pick up an item and ask it's value that the true bargaining sets in. Once you have established that you are interested in something remember, counter offer 1/4 to 1/3 of what they've asked. They may act insulted, surprised....it's all part of the game. They in turn will again offer a price (usually a couple of bucks less)....you may raise YOUR offer a little. This may go on for as much as 15 mins until an agreed sum is reached. Another thing to note: (it really helped us). Thais seem to be very superstitious...if you "walk away" and say no, thank you, i'll look a bit further; they will consider this "bad luck" as they've been unable to complete the sale. Often the BEST price is gotten by walking away! You will notice them begging you to give them their "lucky sale, pleeeese" and, once they chase you down and finally agree to your "too low a price" they'll rush back to their stall, with your money in hand and proceed to touch everything in their stall with your dollars to ensure "luck" for the rest of the night.
Everything from DVD's and copies of designer watches, clothing, jewelry and lots of knick knacks. Chiang Mai was better for Village artifacts (specially if you take one of the Hill Tribe treks), Ayutthaya was excellent for cheap souveniers. Phuket was great for Tailors and clothing. Note: Chao Phraya Tailors (Bangkok) were the best tailors we found and were professional and courteous. We paid approx. 200USD for a 100% Cashmere suit which included 2 pants, Jacket, shirt and Tie. Beautiful stitching and material.
Always start your bargaining 1/4 to 1/3 below what they initially offer. You can always walk away and, if they're interested, they'll chase you down...literally. Also: Travel light, stock up in Thailand. Suitcases can be bought very cheap and it's cheaper to pay excess baggage than to ship back to mainland Leave a Comment Theme: Discount StoreAddress: All throughout Thailand. Day and Night Markets

We had suits and several clothing articles made throughout Asia; including China, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai. By far, the best quality was in Bangkok's "Chao phra ya Suit" tailors. Their address is: 712-714-716 Krungkasem Road. Tel: (662) 629-9994, 282-1408. Fax: (662) 282-7355. They had an incredible amount of textiles to choose from, were by far the most proffessional and, even delivered to our hotel for us. We recomend at least 2-3 days, although yes, they CAN have it ready for you in just 24 hours (sometimes, even less). You want to allow one day for a second "fit" and any necessary alterations. Speciafy things such as 1 or 2 pockets, special requests, etc.
Incredible assortment of Cashmere and Cashmere blends. Great silks and textiles. Look through their various magazines, will copy a suit to a tee.
We paid about $140.00USD for Cashmere, Suit, 2 pants, 3 Silk Shirts and a Silk Tie. This was NOT the cheapest we'd been offered elsewhere but trust us, was by far our favorite taylor. . by SLLiew Located at the end of Silom Road near the river close to Oriental Hotel is the Bangkok General Post Office. There is a philatelic counter that sells past issues of commemorative stamps at face value. There is a side board displaying available sets of issues with a number. You select the number and the number of sets and the person at the counter will help you with your purchase. Thai stamps are usually large and colorful and great to collect to understand Thai culture. Theme: Hobbies

Before heading out here with big ideas...it's a good general tip to do some homework first and bring along a list or, computer printout of prices for different items you may wish to purchase. Electronics for one thing, were either not that much cheaper or, even more expensive than back here in US. Often times, you have to take shipping, excess luggage fees or, inconvinience of carrying on into consideration. Another thing you should factor into cost of things is worth of a reputable warranty. It's a heck of alot more convinient to walk into the neighborhood Sears than to have to worry about return/shipping charges to a foreign country. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

by SLLiew On every Saturday and Sunday, visit the compound of Bangkok General Post Office where there are tents set up with individual stamps selling Thai and foreign used or mint stamps at bargain prices. The prices are much better than the many regular stamp shops near the Post Office area. Local Thais like to collect mint stamps in sheets of four. Besides stamps, there are sale of other collectibles including currency and phone cards. Best time is Saturday morning, afternoon and Sunday morning. Many stalls start closing after Sunday noon. In this shopping center you will find al you need, in good barquin prices.
I bought a handmade suit with good quality, and it was only 3000 bahts(62 Euros). Also there are great music shops, where you find nice local music and also western rock. Prices are from 120 to 400 bahts/cd.
As much as you have... Leave a Comment Theme: Men's ClothesAddress: Near Siam center, 444 Phayathai Road
