Electronics

by expatbangkok

Well I'm gonna agree and disagree with John. All the electronic gear that I have bought in Thailand is still working after 10 years, with the exception of my mobile phones which only last 1 year. Also, when I bought my PC at IT City in Panthip, they asked me if I wanted to install all the pirate software before I said yes. Nintendo Wii was $350 at Sydney duty free when I passed through in May and more expensive in Bangkok (about $500). Ipods are much the same price everywhere. The pirated games are cheaper of course.I was also upgraded to business class once due to an overbooked flight. Needless to say I was the only chappy in sipping champers in shorts and thongs.

clothing in Bangkok

by bulldogtwo

At the moment??? Not hardly. The Thais have really come of age. In the old days, 70's 80's it was fashionable to dress what we may consider old fashioned, mostly because it was cute to the younger Thais. Mickey mouse purses and t's were cute back in the day, still are to some extent, but, these days the young Thais are just as fashionably aware as American, Aussie or European teen these days. More importantly they can now afford it these days. Again back in the day the number of middle class was almost nonexistent. Today the middle class is huge and growing. Says a lot for the country I think.Have fun!

overall: Prices in general

by matseb

Articles which are much cheaper than in North America or Europe:*All veggies and fruits which are grown in Thailand (note: Apples are imported either from China or the Pacific Northwest/USA) - prices are at least 80 % off*All sweets, even imported chocolate ("Ritter Sport", 100 g: 85 Baht)*A lot of hygine stuff is at least 50 % off* Soda and beer is about 70 % off* Cigarettes produced in Thailand cost nearly nothing: a pack of "Syphone (20) cost 42 Baht* Clothes are at least 50 % off (does not include world wide brands)High priced articles (compared to North America or Europe):*Wine (although grown in Thailand, Laos or China) It's common to buy men's suits in Bangkok. The tailors are mostly Indians.Be aware that clothes, watches and other stuff is not original as branded! Well, for some people that's welcomed. Payments with credit cards are no problems in large shops. I would suggest...

(various): ~~~ handy moisturized terry towels ~~~

by matseb

As it is always really hot and dusty here, you want to make shure you've got to refresh yourself once in a while. There's a solution for you: buy those towels and get your own supply as you can't buy them everywhere. I can't live without them anymore. They are supposted to be used while freezed or cooled but it works just fine without it. There are several brands and items but always in large enough measures:* "Snow Ice Eau de Cologne Cotton Cloth Towel"* "Refresh Terry Towel" (both manufactured by Four Star Thai - linked below)* "Jasper Hot and cool Cologne Refreshing towel" - (manufactures by Pahthawin Co.) - my choiceThe products are mostly displayed in the glass refrigdegerators. The purchase prices are around 10 to 15 Baht each. There is usually no discount given if you buy a large amount of items.

Night markets Chang Mai: Shop when you see it

by ScottForster

The night markets are great and all the stalls on the streets. There is seriously three nights of browsing berfore you buy. We made the mistake of assuming that whateer was available in Chang Mai we could get in Bangkok. And as Bangkok was at the end of our trip we saved/ delayed our shopping until in Bangkok. Mistake. Buy in Chang Mai All those T Shirts with the stupid logo's. The small motorcycle racing jackets are only in Chang Mai. Wooden bookmarks are great gifts, Fisherman pants are everywhere in Chang Mai. Jewellery, crafts clothes are all in Chang Mai. Mmm, some places are fixed, but everything has its price. At the stalls- go 50% then settle where you happy, 55% is good.

Markets: The Walking Street markets Sat-Sun Cahng Mai

by ScottForster

All the stalls have great items at good prices, one lap up the street to find some good items and price comparisons. On the return lap- BUY. What ever you want- wooden bookmarks are great gifts 10-20b each. Fisho pants 100b, Tshirts and more. Food was excellent here on the sides of the street.Light a lantern and let it float up in to the night sky- you'll remember it later. 60-70% of the asking price. Check out the quality

General Post Office - compound: Weekend Stamp Market

by SLLiew

On every Saturday and Sunday, visit the compound of Bangkok General Post Office where there are tents set up with individual stamps selling Thai and foreign used or mint stamps at bargain prices. The prices are much better than the many regular stamp shops near the Post Office area. Local Thais like to collect mint stamps in sheets of four. Besides stamps, there are sale of other collectibles including currency and phone cards.Best time is Saturday morning, afternoon and Sunday morning. Many stalls start closing after Sunday noon.

Bangkok General Post Office: Buying mint stamps from Post Office

by SLLiew

Located at the end of Silom Road near the river close to Oriental Hotel is the Bangkok General Post Office. There is a philatelic counter that sells past issues of commemorative stamps at face value. There is a side board displaying available sets of issues with a number. You select the number and the number of sets and the person at the counter will help you with your purchase.Thai stamps are usually large and colorful and great to collect to understand Thai culture.
