Well-stcoked bookshops: Guide book on the Thai western border

by Saagar

I bought my copy at one bookshop in BKK airport. I'm just finished reading the book "Three Pagodas. A journey Down the Thai-Burmese Border", Second revised & Expanded Edition, Christian Goodden 2002.It is veeeery detailed, a real brick, and counting the hours I have spent reading through half of this book, I could just as well go there and figure things out for myself... And still have some hours left. For the intrepid and exact traveller who is going to explore the nitty-gritty of the Thai-Burmese border, it gives sense to use this book as a reference, though. I'd like to go there sometime, but... currently, I have used the book as medicine against insomnia. Big yaaaawn. About 16 USD

Chatuchak market- must visit

by travellingforfun

Look up pricing in your homecountry first

by Homanded

Before heading out here with big ideas...it's a good general tip to do some homework first and bring along a list or, computer printout of prices for different items you may wish to purchase. Electronics for one thing, were either not that much cheaper or, even more expensive than back here in US.Often times, you have to take shipping, excess luggage fees or, inconvinience of carrying on into consideration.Another thing you should factor into cost of things is worth of a reputable warranty. It's a heck of alot more convinient to walk into the neighborhood Sears than to have to worry about return/shipping charges to a foreign country.

Outdoor Markets: The art of bargaining

by Homanded

Outdoor markets throughout Asia (specially Thailand) are fun, challenging, economical ways of purchasing your souveniers and, even essentials while you're visiting.Nothing adds more to the flavour of coming to Thailand than immersing yourself in the market scene of which there is practically one designed to cater to each of your specific needs.Hard barganing is a must AND expected. Rule of thumb is ALWAYS start at 1/4 to 1/3 less than they initially offer you. Some of the following we figured out after a couple of days: Vendors will be vying for your attention: The sounds of Halooooo Mr....Cheap...just looky...." are forever etched in our minds. They will be trying to get you toenter their "space" in the market. It is not until you actually enter, pick up an item and ask it's value that the true bargaining sets in. Once you have established that you are interested in something remember,...

Markets: Shopping in Thailand

by meaganelizabeth

I think the best places to shop are Petchburi Market and MBK. Petchburi or Khaosan road are good for the experience, although Khaosan is still more expensive than Petchburi, which is really the cheapest. MBK is great becuase it is so cheap and it has everything. It is five floors of everything you can imagine. I have been to the weekend market, and I have to say it was a dissapointment,. I guess interesting, you can buy live anmals there, and there seems to be a lot of secondhand items, but just really disgusting. It smells, and is messy,. It is too big, and nothing seems quality. I did buy bamboo there, but you can get that other places. At MBK and at all of the markets You can buy the traditional thai souvenirs. Wooden lanterns, lamps, plates, forks knives. REally gorgeous. Lacoste, deisel, shirts. Deisel adidas, Puma, every kind of sneaker. Also fake bags, Tods, Gucci, Louis Vuitton,...

Narai Phand: Handi-crafts in Bangkok

by bkathryn

This large place is a conglomerate of small boutiques with a wide variety of handi-crafts from throughout Thailand. It was easy to get to on the Sky Train. I tended to purchase silk and silk clothing. I sometimes shopped with others who were looking for silver, jade, bronze and other materials and had no problem at this locale. Prices were likely somewhat more expensive than in street markets, but the goods were of good quality.
