The markets: "got good price for you"

by jobaby

The markets - the title of this tip is probably what you will hear from 20 different voices all barraging the same selling style techiques. Bartering can test your patience and your dollar, so be wary that most merchandise has a 300% mark up. It is fun though and probably far cheaper than what you would get at home. I think that you really need to be in the mood to barter so if your not, it is best to stay with the stores with fixed prices. What you think that you need and wont put excess on your luggage allowance. What you think is reasonable.

Pat Pong Night Market

by voyageur2

Night market is an unusual way of shopping in all world. but pat pong showed me the magic of shopping when i am in Thailand. Silk and hand made products were among my favourites. Variety and cheap prices were very impressive for tourists. Anyway negotiating is the main pleasure of shopping there. And it is not hard to decrease a price to its one-third or one-fourth.

HOME DECORATIONS

by vigi

Thailand's abundant wicker and grasses are transformed into lampshades, storage boxes, colourful mats, handbags, letter holders, tissue boxes and slippers. Wooden furniture includes cabinets, tables, dining room and bedroom sets in natural hues or whitewashed finishes and pastel colours. Burmese cotton wall hangings, paper-mache animals, boxes, vases, lamp covers, etc. make great gifts.

HANDICRAFT / STATUE

by vigi

Shop Till You Drop! Thailand is still at the point where low prices with good quality can be found. Craft items that can best be brought locally include hilltribe shoulder bags, woodcarvings, silverware, and wickerwork.

Let's rock Hawaii with this skirt

by ExoticGal

This skirt is just a long big piece of flowery cloth beautiful enough to rock every beach in the world. (Doesn't fit the white shirt I was wearing, though. But who cares? Tourists can wear any wierd thing they want, hahahhah...) under US$5

Over 18 K gold is a good buy

by B_Lacombe

They are plenty of gold jewelry stores in Asia. Chinatown is often the best deals and stores tends to be near each others. Compare price of gold per weight and the the weight of the item you want to buy. Contrarely to Norh America where the price of gold is only part of the price, in Asia, most of the price of the ring if the gold its-self, not the artcraft. You may consider buying 22K (or even 24K) but bear in mind that they are very soft and tend to loose its round shape rapidly unless you take them heavier (thicker band). But to wear on special occasion, the gold is VERY yellow. BKK is only one of the place to buy gold ring (where I bought mine).

No matter where.....: Bargain,bargain, bargain

by MaidenTsar

Everything is negotiable. As an example, at the Night Market in Chaingmai, I saw an item for 1000 bht - by the time I walked away, it was 100 bht. Shop around!! Spirit Houses cannot be touched for the prices they offer in Thailand - 100-400 bhat ; in the US $400! Spices and teas also fall into this category. Needless to say. Thai silk is a given. Also - essential oils is quite a bargain. 1/10th the US price....depending on th item.

Chatuchak - weekend market in Bangkok

by Suecia

This is one of the largest markets in the world. You can find anything here, from live snakes to cheap shoes. My advice is that if you find something you like - buy it immediately! YOu will probably not find your way back, that is how big it is. Wooden games - perfect gift. Silver jewellery - but make sure it is real silver. Underwear for women - if you can find your size ;o)I am a size 36 but I was considered "Large" in Thailand. Bangkok is one of the cheaper places. Of course as a tourist you will pay a bit more than the locals.

Phod Bride or Sapham Phod: Really cheap deal!!!

by Shelly6622

Various.: Shopping in Thailand.

by pazzer

The shopping in Thailand is amazing in itself. From the floating markets in Bangkok to the sellers on the beaches. But you must barter hard if you want a real bargain and thats all part of the fun. Gems, gold, sports stuff, carvings, watches are all good value. Depends on your ability to barter.
