    Gifts to the monks

    The old fashioned method !

At various shops around the place you will see orange buckets loaded with food and toiletries.

These are passed to monks as part of their daily 'alms-collecting'. Monks are supposed to have very few possessions - but being Thailand the austere monastary rules are to put it politely - 'a bit strained'.

Buying one of these goodie-bags is at least one way of introducing yourself to local monks. Many of them will be young boys who 'novice' monks and so in the monastary for only a few months. They will probably be more willing to discuss Playstation 2 games, David Beckham and school studies rather than Buddhism.

Please remember that they are not allowed to touch a woman, even their own mothers, during the time they are monks.
