Tuk-tuk in Hatyai town

There is no public city bus in Hatyai. Tuk-tuk is the main public transportation in Hatyai. It functions like a taxi cab but without the comfort and cool air-conditioner. It can get a bit cramped at the back. Tuk-tuk in Hatyai is different from those in Bangkok. In Hatyai, it is bigger and almost like a mini truck. Passengers sitting in two rows of benches facing each other at the back of the driver. It is like a 'songtheaw' but smaller version. The space is small inside even for an asian male like me (170cm tall). I cannot imagine how is it like for a westerner to be in it...

Songtheaw is a bigger version of tuk-tuk. It is like a city bus running on designated routes. It can get a bit claustrophobic inside when it is crowded.

Important! As many VTers have advised, agree on the fare before getting on. usually 10baht per person within town area.

Tuk-tuk is the most common type of local transportation in Hatyai. They will get u everywhere and anywhere in minutes within the city of Hatyai and close by suburbs. Do not pay more than 20 baht/pax for rides within the city (about 5 - 10 minutes ride) and 40 baht/pax for close by surburbs(10 minutes ride and above). The cost of the ride will also depends on how many passanger they carry. If there is only 1 - 2 pax per ride, they will charge you a minimum of 20 BHT but if you have more than 5, it can be negotiated to about 15 BHT per ride. Expect to pay double the price per pax or 100 baht for the whole tuk-tuk ride if its after 12 midnight.

diana posing by a tuk tuk...

Tuk-tuks is a cheap public transport for short distance around the city... It can be flagged off the road... but most station themselves in front of hotels, train station and bus terminals... It is an essential part of Thai lifestyle where such transport is used to go to the market, to the temple, to the city centre for shopping or just anywhere within the city where it is too far (and too hot) to walk...

Be warned that unless you speak Thai or is Thai, the fare will probably be higher... However, the minimum fare has gone up to 20 baht with the numerous increase in petrol price a last few months...

My gf at the rear of the Tuk-tuk

seems like many people already wrote about tuk-tuk....
i just wanna make some conclusion about tuk-tuk. I noticed that tuk-tuk is a mean of transportation within the city center. They seldom go out of city unless you ask them to fetch you there. Once i was trying to get a tuk-tuk from somewhere out of city center, and believe me, it was hard to find one.
See also about another type of transportation at my 'Outer City Travel - Pickup Truck' tip.

Tuk-tuk from bus terminal to town

There are two kinds of tuk-tuk in Hatyai. One is the usual open-air truck and the other is motorbike. The price for both are different, the truck type could cost about 10B higher than motorbike.

The cost from bus station to central Hatyai cost 20B. The rate could be higher during peak hour.

I have good impression to the tuk-tuk driver. Once I was asking the tuk-tuk (truck) price and complaining too expensive. The driver came down from his truck and help me flash down a motorbike.

So many warnings about taking the Tuk Tuk in Thailand. In Hat Yai, I got around with 10 bhat for each ride. Just make sure you agree on price beforehand.

If you are not sure of the rates, just ask the people around you ... get a 2nd or 3rd opinion if needed.

This guys go really fast !!

Tuk-Tuk everywhere

One can easily get around with tuk-tuks everywhere. However, some of these drivers may overcharge especially if they are aware that you're a foreigner.

A tuk-tuk around the town should cost approximately 40 bahts per ride. Remember to ask for the price before hopping on board the tuk-tuk.

A 4-wheel tuk-tuk which is almost new

As is the case elsewhere in Thailand, Tuk-Tuks can be a convenient way of getting around.
Watch out with some drivers though. Tuk-Tuks are an essential part of Thai life and without them a lot of Thais would not be able to get around as they need to. Unfortunately some drivers try to take advantage of foreigners and if you don't agree a price before the journey they will try to charge you a ridiculous amount when you reach your destination. Therefore make sure you know the fare before you get on board. This kind of thing just doesn't happen with Thais.

Tuk Tuk is another kind of public transport in Thailand, it looks like a small convertible pick-up. No luxury no comfort (especially if you're tall) but very cheap. Cost only 10 baht per person travelling within town area.
