by Guantanamera Ko Lanta makes for a great destination for lovers, newlyweds, etc, due to its seclusion and lovely natural beauty... You will often see couples at Ao Khlong Jaak, but there are also a smattering of singles as well... In this shot, I've photographed one of the palm trees in the garden under moonlight, evoking the romantic ambience of the area... Leave a Comment

by Guantanamera Here is a photo of a typical sunset at Ao Khlong Jaak... Soft, delicate pastels, and the crescent-like shape of the bay adds some drama... This part of the world is definitely isolated as I unexpectedly discovered when I wanted to make a phone call to another country and was told that there is no phone service on this part of the island... The staff at the resort had a satellite phone but it had low batteries and didn't work... So effectively, you are completely out of touch with the outside world... Leave a Comment

children playing. by willy_wonka one of the cutest things i've ever seen is this little blondy german boy playing with a local kid. they were screeching when the water came near them, running around nekkid, playing together. children are children no matter where in the world they come from, or where in the world they are.... here is my moment of showing peace to the world. lol ;-) Leave a Comment

by Guantanamera Riding an elephant in the remote tropical jungle of Ko Lanta was a wonderful experience that I can highly recommend... Although it's quite touristy, it still gives you a sense of what it might have been like to live in the region hundreds of years ago, before the advent of automobiles... The elephants are very gentle and its really something to see the way the elephant moves underneath you, and to feel the graceful rhythm of its walk... Leave a Comment

by Guantanamera The elephant trek took me through some really wonderful and stunning tropical jungle areas... Usually, you'll hear a lot of bird calls, and you might see the occasional bizarre looking insect or a macaque climbing a tree as you move through the jungle... But if you're very lucky, like we were, you can also catch a glimpse of the endangered Gibbon monkey...! These monkeys are very shy, and will scamper off quickly when they see you're nearby... This picture shows some of the plant life in the area... Leave a Comment

by Guantanamera The elephant only takes you so far, and then you get to a point where you have to walk the rest of the way to get to your ultimate destination, the waterfall... I visited during the dry season so the waterfall was only a small trickle which isn't really even discernible in the picture shown here... Reaching a goal is often like that... Leave a Comment

by Guantanamera As you can see in this picture, Ao Khlong Jaak has a fine, broad sandy beach and often completely or nearly completely deserted! Part of the beach is kind of rocky under the water but the other half has excellent smooth sands, and water temperature is very warm, much better than at Phuket... Leave a Comment

by Guantanamera Pictured here, a typical scene of a South Thai elephant driver, enjoying a mid-afternoon siesta while balancing on the back of an elephant...! The drivers seemed to know what they were doing, and basically controlled the elephant by whacking it on the skull with a big stick to get it to obey... Leave a Comment

by Guantanamera Opening your wallet and realizing that you're carrying around currencies from 5 different countries simultaneously is one of the truly enjoyable moments in the life of any world traveler... I had just such a moment while on the beach at Ao Khlong Jaak...! Can you identify the 5 currencies?? Leave a Comment

by jenniferchin Sea kayaking is FUN !! This day trip was over at Talabeng Island. http://www.krabidir.com/lantaseakayak/
Kayaking along the island was really cool and fun ! No worries if you have no experience. The helpful guide will take care of you. We explored a few caves there. Very exciting !! Lunch was included in the trip. Having a nice meal of rice, vegetables, fried fish, omelate and tom yum soup, washed down with sweet juicy pineapples and watermelon on the beach is totally glorious !! Leave a Comment
