We had one of the best days we have ever had in all of thailand. Our day cruise aboard Dragonheart was the best thing we could have done. We had signed up for just a day trip which was advertised as returning at 4pm. The crew was so nice and friendly that they extended it through the sunset and it was one of the most romantic and happy days of our...more
It is possible to go diving or snorkelling, with all good intentions I never managed to do the former during my first trip there as it's one of those islands where it's so laid back and chilled out it's all you can do to drag your bones out of your hammock to do anything so energetic as pull on a BCD and tank to explore underwater Lipe... bliss...more
I spent some time on Koh lipe and was fortunate enough to find the Karma Bar on the beach in front of Mountain Resort. The beach on Pattaya was abit crowded and noisy at night with all the competition from the other bars. Karma was all by itself and the staff was top notch. It was the only bar that made proper cocktails and even shakes for my kids....more
In the middle of the island, is Pooh's Bar. This is where everyone invariably ends up at nights or even during the day... it's a great place, run by Pooh and his cousin Noi... (say hi to them please and tell them Winnie recommended you!) There's also Jack's Jungle Bar by Sunset Beach, and Moonlight Bar on Pattaya Beach. Laid back, casual, less is...more
Getting there: offseason only from Pak Bara, november to april also from Langkawi, Satun, Trang (Hat Yao Pier) and Ko Lanta, as well as Ko Bulon and Ko Tarutao. If you come from Langkawi you should change money before, and you will need also some small bills to pay the transfer from the boat to the island (no pier, 50 baht per person)more
There are 2 trains from Bangkok to Trang (depart 17.05 and 18.30 arrive 8.05 and 10.31), the later and a bit slower Rapid has non aircon sleepers from 521 Baaht, the Express has aircon sleepers from 761 Baht (aircon is usualy to cold for my taste, but in low season, May to October, the only way to get to Koh Lipe is by speedboat from Pak Bara at...more
I spent a month traveling around the islands in the Andaman Sea.
Ko Lipe is starting to have the feel of Ko Pi Pi. It is not as bad as Ko Samui yet... the constant loud growl of the engines from the longtail boats takes away from any great appeal for relaxing in the sand spit on the north end of Ko Lipe just down from Mountain resort and stay away from Patayya Beach!!! Yikes..that place is zoo with so many boats in the water it is almost impossible if not foolish to even try to go for a swim.
Sunset beach is the best place for a somewhat relaxing stay at Porn's resort.
But if you had hoped to go to Lipe to get away from reality and to live on a tropical island like Gilligan...than cross Lipe off your list. It is filled with shops and the general tourist thing...even tattoo shops are everywhere now..
But if you are a city person and crave the packed in like sardines resort atmosphere than Lipe is your place...
In short..I was not too happy with what is happening to Lipe...but I guess we are all to blame..we all love the islands of Thailand too much and the Thai's are doing what everyone else does...earning a living.
Lipe is a fine place to use as a jumping off place for the rest of the islands in Taratauo National Park...but in my opinion would never be my destination again. If you are a backpacker you will not like Lipe...although...it is a good place to resupply with food, clothes, sunscreen or to exchange your money...
If you dive, go with Lotus Dive at Pooh's, Forra Dive Center at the Chao Leh Village or Sabye Sports at Sunset Beach. Most experienced guys there.
I dived with Lotus Dive. They do good packages for divers, you get the bungalows at a discounted rate of 300 Baht a night, nice clean, new, concrete rooms with attached toilets. U get discounted rates for the internet at Pooh's Bar, also free 20 minutes for each dive! And the service is brilliant... I didn't have to lift a finger! Bob did everything for me, what service! ;-) i just had to get into my wetsuit, put my gear on, BWRAF check and roll off the boat.
Equipment: Everything is available, and the equipment was in good, pretty new condition! U can rent cameras, dive comp, and all other normal gear. Not sure whether it's because i used the smallest of everything but everyone else's gear looked spanking too.
Favorite thing: So where exactly is Koh Lipe? It's in Southern Thailand, the nearest and most popular island is actually Koh Tarutao which is halfway between the mainland and Koh Lipe. Koh Tarutao is a national park, very well preserved and so very quiet, as are the surrounding islands, therefore you don't get the sort of party life as in other Thai islands and only a few very basic accommodations... but Koh Lipe is actually out of the national park jurisdiction so you do get a few cool chilled out lodgings and bars on the beach and in the jungle. It's not so easy to get to, pretty time consuming as there's only one ferry a day from Satun, etc... but well worth the trip if, like me, you love basic rustic lazy island holidays!
