Phi Phi Islands have two monkey areas, the monkey beach in Phi Phi Don which is for swimming and snorkeling during the peak season of November to April via Big Group Speed Boat Tour and the Monkey Cove with small hidden beach at Phi Phi le Island (during the lean season of may to october) which is for photo ops and monkey feeding with bananas and bread provided by your firendly speed boat tour guide for free. you can throw the food at the pig tailed macaque monkeys hanging at the many vines at the limestone cliffs or at the 4 meter mini beach beside it and the monkeys will catch it or dive at the sea to get it and then climb to the nearest vines in the water to go up the cliff again. you can take pictures and videos while they are at it. Monkey Cove is located in the Center part of eastern Phi phi Le, between viking cave and Loh Samah Bay.

This will be my Phi Phi Le Maya Bay Tips

Maya Bay was a popular destination then even before the shooting of Leonardo Di Caprio's 2000 film, the Beach. Maya Bay has one of the three areas for Snorkeling in Phi Phi Le Island and the other ones are in Lo Samah Bay and at the Southern End near Bida Yai Island. Maya Bay is made beautiful by the surrounding Karst Limestone Cliffs around it. Maya Bay has a wide 200 meter sugary fine white sand beach front in the middle part of the bay and some isolated pockets of white sand beaches at the left side of the Limestone cliffs. There is a single store in the beach selling drinks and there is bathroom facilities too and a park ranger hut. Since It is The Main Attraction of the Phi Phi islands National Park and that all Phi Phi Island Tours come through here, the tour guides pay for the park entrance fees for the tourists at 400 baht per person as admission fee.

It can be really crowded here even in the lean season of may to october as more than 30 speed boats (both private hired and big group tours) and long tail boats converge into maya bay everyday. You are alloted 1 hour to do your thing like sun bathing or swimming or snorkeling at Maya Bay if you are in a big speed boat tour and the express boats only stay at the entrance to maya bay as they don't have docking facilities in the beach for these large boats. You must try to pick a spot with less people but this will be next to impossible unless you are in maya bay in the late afternoon (most tours go to maya by in the morning).

There are no lodging and commercial and hotel facilities in the Island as it is banned due to the Swiftlet Colony at Viking Cave. Maya Bay is 48 kilometers away from Chalong Pier in Phuket and can b reached by speed boat in 50 minutes or express boat by 1 1/2 hours or by long tail boat by 2 1/2 hours.

This will be my Phi Phi Island Loh Samah Bay Tips and Pictures

There are three coral formations which are ideal for snorkeling around Phi Phi Le Island, the first is at the entrance of Maya bay (accessible via big boat tour) which is 40 meters away from the beach, the second is at the Southern Part Of Phi Phi Le near Bida Noi Island with a 20 meter white sand beach beside it (accessible by private speed boat tour and long tail boats) and Loh Samah Bay at the North Western Part of Phi Phi le island which is accessible by group speed boat tour and hence this is the one we did the snorkeling for obvious reasons. you must have a life jacket when snorkeling here at lo samah bay as the waves and undercurrents are strong but the coral formations and the assorted fishes are plentiful. the coral reefs is just 2 meters down from the waterline.

This Will Be My Tips and Pictures in Pileh Viking Cave in Phi Phi Le

The Viking cave is located in the North east part of Phi Phi Le Island and is actually a huge cave with nesting sites of the swiftlet birds. the swiftlet bird's nest is a prized posession and worth it's weight in gold as it is one of the four prized delicacies of chinese cooking hence the bird's nests of the swiftlets (which are made from dirt and saliva of the birds) are harvested and processed and sold to chinese restaurants for astronomical prices lthat goes up to 2,000 US Dollars a Kilo! this is the reason why Phi Phi le island is uninhabited as to guard against poaching these valuable birds nest at the Viking Cave. It is called viking cave due to ancient paintings in the caves with boats that resembled viking ships. Phi Phi Island Boat Tours just makes a photo stop here and no tourist is allowed to enter the cave.

The Pileh Cove is in the South Eastern Part of Phi Phi Le Island and is part of the Phi Phi Island National Park and just before the small bida nok and bida nai islands. Pileh Cove is an isolated cove with emerald green clear waters and coral reefs below and some Phi Phi Island speed boat tours allow a few minutes of snorkelling here. the cove itself is just about 300 meters in length and the water here is shallow and clear and is surrounded by the Karst Limestone Hills that Krabi Islands are famous for. It is similar to El Nido in Palawan Philippines but the Karst Lime Stone Cliffs there are longer and the cove bigger.

The Khai Island group of 3 islands (Khai Nok, Khai Nui and Khai Nai island) is a popular snorkelling and swimming destination in itself and there are half day and full day tours to the Khai islands from Chalong Pier Everyday but Khai Nok Island receives the lion's share of the tourists as it is the largest of the three Islands and it has the largest white sand bar that connects this dumb bell shaped island that has rows and rows of beach bunk beds and unbrellas for the thousands of day tourists coming to this island. Khai Nok Island gets the lions share because almost all of the Phi Phi Island and Krabi Islands Speed Boat Tours have a pit stop here for 1 to 2 hours where the guests can relax at the beach bunk beds (you have to pay 100 baht extra for a pair of bunk beds) and have free fresh fruits like watermelons, dragon fruits, papaya, pineapple. there is also some beach bars along the sand bar that you can have assorted brewskies and soft drinks and alco pops like vodka cruiser and bacardi breezer for 120 baht a pop.

Khai nok island also has clear green waters where you can swim and snorkel and be with the fishes as the fishes here are friendly and you can feed them bread too. just be careful of the strong undercurrents at the shoreline. the sands is is powdery white.

Khai Nok island is 40 minutes by speed boat from Phi Phi Don and is part of Pha Nga Province.

being a touristy destination, Phuket and the Nearby Islands in Phang Nga Bay and the Andaman Sea have excellent swimming and snorkelling areas and you will be spoiled by the number or choices, it depends on the places you will want to do the swimming and snorkelling activities. The best areas are not in phuket island but in the islands in Pha Nga Bay like in Phi Phi Le island (at Maya Bay, Monkey Beach, Pileh Cove), Phi Phi Don Island, Khai Islands, Koh Larn (coral island), Ao Nang in Krabi, Railey Beach in Krabi and at the Similan Islands, further away in the Andaman Sea.

If you are booking a speed boat tour around the islands in Phang Nga Bay and Andaman sea (like Phi Phi Island tours, Krabi Island Tours, Pha Nga Bay Tours, Similan Island Tours, etc), the snorkeliing gear is provided but not the fins, you have to rent them for 100 baht a pair for the whole day.
