Luna Restaurant and Bar Mae Nam

    by Gili_S Written Feb 9, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This Luna Restaurant and Bar in Mae Nam was convenience place to go and have dinner because it was just next to my hotel. The location is nice by the water pond, but this also guaranteed some ants on your table and mosquitoes in the air. However, we were well prepared for jungle conditions so this did not bothered us too much, the service was friendly and the food was nice. You can ask them to cook it anyway you want with your favourite side dish choice.

Lamai Food Centre.: Crowded tables but.....

by pfsmalo Written Jul 4, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Right next to the girlie bars, not far from the evening market is the food centre. About 20 stalls set out where you can pick and choose from the different stalls. Main dishes are cheap, around 50 bahts + a bowl of rice. At the far end there are a dozen tables set out with chairs where you go sit and wait for the food to be prepared, and they'll bring it to you. Hard to find a table some evenings though. As they don't sell beer at the stalls you have to go to either the gislie bars or to the Café Madrid at the back of the square.Where you pay through the nose at the bars, the price is a normal one at the Madrid. At the Madrid they even let us have our food taken there, so no jostling for seats. Every time we went back to the food centre, we just went to the Madrid, got them to set up some tables and beer and then went and ordered our food. Good plan.

Favorite Dish: Couple of times I had the delicious spare ribs with jacket potato smothered with hot chili sauce.

The Simple Life.: Very, very local but good.

by pfsmalo Updated Jul 2, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This was one of the closest restaurants to our place and a fine discovery. Pom, part owner speaks very good English so it was easy enough to know what we were eating at the beginning of our stay. Another brilliantly cheap place averaging also 2 euros for a meal. In fact we were spending more on beer a night than food......
Pom has always a large basketful of toys and books for the kids for those "I'm fed up, Mum" type of moments.

There is also no problem if you order by 'phone or in passing and they'll deliver it to your door.

Favorite Dish: Had king prawns one evening in a delicious pepper sauce.

The "M" restaurant.: Good, simple food.

by pfsmalo Updated Jul 2, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Always a warm welcome here from the manager to the cook (his mum), to the waitresses. Very good food, always done how you want it. (Don't forget to learn how to say - not too spicy). This place was recommended by so many people and fully lives up to those recommendations. 90% Thai food with a smattering of international. I couldn't believe the prices here, on average around 2 euros for a meal, one of the reasons we ate so little at the house we rented.
Probably a bit far out for those staying in Lamai or further but worth stopping at coming back from the Na Muang falls.

Favorite Dish: I always went for the Pork Massaman curry, delicious.....

  • Restaurant 99: Daily Specials

    by Eric1949 Updated Jun 24, 2011

Although a German restaurant with many German/Austrian/Swiss regular customers, on many evenings you will also find a few Brits.
Excellent daily specials, almost all days come with a soup & salad, home cooking style.
It is a small restaurant, and being so, is very friendly.

Favorite Dish: My personal favorites are the chicken dishes, breaded fish & the greek style kebabs.

  • Betelnut Restaurant: Thai-Californian Fusion Cooking

    by Yvonne79 Updated Apr 4, 2011

As I love fusion cooking, we decided to have dinner at the Betelnut one evening. The restaurant specializes mainly in Thai-Californian fusion cooking, but says to use ingredients and techniques from all over the world. We were not disappointed. The dinner we had was indeed extraordinarily tasty! It was probalbly the best food we had on the island.

The restaurant has, however, also its downside. The restaurant is in a sidestreet off the Chaweng main road in a rather small and bald venue. So if you look for a romantic place this might not be your first choice.
What also disappointed ma a bit was that the owner of the restaurant was present, but only greeted the (only!) other guests, because he knew them. I thought it would have been a nice gesture to ask all guests if everything was ok and they liked their food. But then, this does of course not belittle the food, which was really great and service in general was very friendly.

The restaurant is certainly more expensive than most restaurants on the island, but I think it is worth the price.

Favorite Dish: For starters we had the clam chowder with green curry and the chicken wontons with sweet hot sauce. Main courses were the Argenine beef filet and a special that I unfortunately don't remember what it was. Anyway, everything was extremely good and I don't think that you can go wrong with anything they have on the menu.

Sandies: At Silver Sand Beach Resort

by jackliveshere Updated Apr 4, 2011

I must admit I was a little let down after dining here recently. We returned a year later (Dec 2007) to find the portions had decreased, service had dropped off and food average. It was disappointing considering how fantastic is was in Dec 2006. I might just give them the benefit of the doubt and put it down to coming in on a bad night.

    Favorite Dish: All rather average.

THE BETELNUT Koh Samui: Unique CaliforniThai Fushion - Don't miss it!

by JessH Updated Apr 4, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

When in Koh Samui, the choice of restaurants is literally endless, espeically along Chaweng Beach. There is something to suite every traveller's wallet.

If you' ve tried all the fresh fruit bags, sticky rice and satay grills from streetvendors and are looking to spoil yourself, head down to the south of Chaweng Beach to the 'Betelnut'.
It is small, tucked-away in a side street (Samui is safe - don't worry too much about side street exploration!) and offers the best fusion food I have ever tasted!

Budget-wise, it is medium to expensive for Koh Samui, yet it's quite a bargain for overseas guests. You can expect high quality and generous portions.

The restaurant is run by Jeffrey, an American with a big heart, big smile (well, he's simply a big guy!) and a passion for food.
He takes his time to talk to all guests, explain the dishes and encourage them to try some of his signature dishes, which he calls 'CaliforniThai'.

Treat yourself to a dinner you'll never forget! I sure haven't!

Favorite Dish: I love all the food there, but the salmon steak with basil mash is my absolute favourite!

For dessert, the 'Gone-in-60-seconds' chocolate brownie is to die for!

Noori India: Very good Indian in Chaweng

by Willettsworld Written Jan 12, 2010

Noori India, one of the oldest Indian restaurants in Samui, offers all your favourite Indian and Mughalai dishes as well as a few you may not have tried before! The menu features Indian cuisine, seafood and some interesting Thai-Indian fusion dishes. The ambience, traditional classical music and personal attention are first rate. The food here is very good and I recommend to any curry lover!

Crystal: Great little place in central Chaweng

by Willettsworld Written Jan 12, 2010

This is a very good little restaurant that was located right opposite where I was staying (at the Chaweng City Hotel - see my accommodation tip) in central Chaweng. I came here every morning for breakfast which cost 110 baht and consisted of 2 fried eggs, bacon, ham, 2 pieces of toast, orange juice and coffee/tea. I also came here for dinner one evening where I had spring rolls, beef in oyster sauce and rice plus a large Chang beer for 220 baht. Other dishes include fried rice/noodles, green curry, western dishes etc.

    SA Barbeque: Mmmmmm,

by junecorlett Written Mar 2, 2009

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This restaurant was recommended to us by family members from South Africa.
The South African flag is flown outside the restaurant and photgraphs of SA hanging on the walls.
We decided to give it a try as the Rugby World Cup was on (2007) and we were desperate to catch the game live on television. South Africa was playing a game on that particular evening.
We found a lot of SA fans there, dressed in their colours supporting SA.

We were not impressed with the food.
We ordered a seafood starter, which was not the greatest, and being a steakhouse, and watching the rugby, we had a steak. Not at all good. Normally a steak is done with a good BBQ basting, this was not, therefore your sauce, if you ordered one, was where the flavour would lie.

.The matchbox says "the only place to spend your afternoon". I don't disagree.

Favorite Dish: The Portugese Piri Piri Chicken was nice and spicy and the Australian T-bone steak is as good as the ones in Aus.
