Thai boxing

An extremely tough sport, famous now the world over. The serious stuff takes place in Bangkok but smaller stadiums (many for the tourists) exist outside of the capital. This one is at Lamai Beach on Koh Samui.
At a few places I have seen large westerners go into the ring to take on small Thai boxers. They almost always end up on the losing side!

Not far from Bohput on the back road to Chaweng via Chong mon there is a relativly new tourist attraction to Koh Samui.
This is football golf.
It is the same as normal golf wiith all the obsticles and hazzards except you have to kick the football into the hole.
It is an excellent 18 hole course.

Equipment: All you need is a scoresheet and soccerball which are provided as well as a free drink.

Shaquille O'Neal plays for Thailand!

In the US, many years have passed where Shaq has been the most dominate player in the NBA. His bull style of play could probably only be stopped by an elephant. Well... it now appears the Western Conference has began a training regimen for one of the newest NBA stars.

This elephant can dunk as well as dribble (ok, so it was water).

Look at those moves!!!!

With a World Cup bid all but over for the Thai Soccer team, they turned to the best competition they could find to play. In this case, it turned out to be a bunch of elephants!

The competition ended in a one-nil victory for the big boys, and the elephants then went to celebrate the victory by playing a little basketball!

Koh Nangyuan, great for diving

The Gulf of Thailand has excellent diving. Around Samui the diving is amazing, with many different exotic fish. If you don't know how to dive you can have one of the courses in the several diving schools in Samui.

Here are the links to some of them : Dive and Adventure Projects ( www.thaistyles.net), Pro Divers ( www.prodivers.nu) or Planet Scuba ( www.planet-scuba.net ).

I fairly recently obtained my Open water Diver license with Samui Planet Scuba based at Central Samui Beach Resort. I booked the course over internet prior to arrival and was given the full details of the courses available and invited to before the course started visit their office for a discover scuba experience in the safety of the hotels pool. I spent around 20 minutes with a member of their staff swimming in the pool just to get a feel for it all and after the initial uncertainty thats it I was hooked!!!

Definately reccomend if your unsure whether divings for you to take advantage of this free experience

Equipment: All equipment is provided

Whale Shark at Chumpon Pinncale two weeks ago

The best diving site around Koh Samui - Koh Tao. This is great site for diver with minimum experience of Advance Open Water divers. By far Samui’ most impressive and desirable (by revisiting divers) dive site, Chumphon Pinnacle is also one of the most challenging dive sites with occasionally strong currents and a maximum depth of 36m (120ft). The site consists of four massive pinnacles that tower up to 16m (53ft) below the surface.
As the site is a good distance offshore, in season visibility is excellent, more than 30m (100ft) and Regular sightings of whale sharks and grey reef sharks make this dive site one of the 'musts' of your trip. The pinnacles themselves are completely carpeted with sea anemones, and schools of batfish, barracudas, trevally & fusiliers create a spectacular scene in the surrounding waters..
Searobin Dive Center in Koh Samui uses a state of the art Speedboat to get you to Chumpone pinnacle within 1.5 hours.

Equipment: As Bangkok air allows only 15kg of luggage without extra charge I recommend only brining your dive computer and mask. The rest of the equipment can be rented and is in great condition.

FUN ON THE BEACH

TOWARD THE JET SKI-Koh Samui

On my first trip to Samui, most of my beach activities included swimming and sun tanning, as well as plenty of drinking.
My second trip was quite a bit different in many ways. I still managed to consume way too much alcohol, but my activitites included my first time on a jet ski, and some para-sailing.
The jet ski cost me (500bht) for about a half an hour, but they are pretty good if you are a little late. The sailing was the same price for about a 15-20 minute ride.
They both took a little to get used to, but after that, it was amazing. Blasting along the waves around the beaches and open ocean was definitely a rush. The view of the beach and jungle from up in the air, made me wish I had my camera, and is a beautiful site.

Equipment: I didn't bring anything but my swimming gear and from where I was staying at Charlies, both activities are very close.
The jet ski rentals are about a five minute walk up the beach to the right of the main path. The para sailing is the same distance but to the left of the main path from the beach restaurant.

Beach fun

On Chaweng Beach (and other beaches, I presume) you’ll find the now mandatory jet-bikes, para-gliding and banana rides. Based on our visit, these sports aren’t always on offer as sometimes the waves are too rough. I wanted to have a play on the jet-bikes but they weren’t there during our final week of the holiday. We also witnessed one para-glider manage to land on the roof of one of the beach bars so it’s obviously not as easy as it looked.

SIDS (Samui International Diving School)

The Waverunner

The leading scuba dive operation is SIDS. They have a number of locations around Samui and also have close links with other dive operations (I’m not really sure of the business arrangements, possibly some sort of franchise). The Wave Runner is the main dive boat SIDS operates and I have to say that it’s probably the best run dive boat I’ve ever been on. Tours start early so breakfast is provided. There are plenty of ‘dry’ areas for students and there is also a shop on board selling sweets, drinks and t-shirts. Dive sites are quite a way out so it’s normally a long day 9+ hours minimum but they do show a film on the way back. For the long trips to Koh Tao, SIDS run a daily speedboat trip but I never got to go on this.

Back on land, SIDS also has a number of shops around the island. The largest in Chaweng offers a good range of gear at very reasonable prices. Most importantly, when problems arise, the staff get them sorted out to the customers satisfaction with the minimum of fuse. SIDS are a PADI 5* centre and are well deserved of that accolade.

Equipment: You can bring your own gear or you rent everything you need from SIDS. It's up to you
