One of the foods that I never really had alot of exposure to when I was in the US was Thai food. It is one of my favorite types, because of its flavour, especially with lime and chilli.

During our safari around the island, we got the chance to see a live display of how Thai cooking gets started. We watched a Thai Salad being made using cabbage, carrot, with plenty of lime and chilli and finished off with some baby shrimp.

One of the best things about Thailand is the food. So why not take some of the holiday home with you and go on a half-day Thai Cooking lesson? We did and we had a fantastic time learning about Thai ingredients and Thai cooking techniques.

We tried SITCA, the Samui Institute of Culinary Arts which is located at the far end of Chaweng Boulevard. We had proffessional lessons in a small group which allowed us the opportunity to ask questions and get individual attention. The chefs are experienced and you are able to learn authentic Thai cooking.
The lesson cost around 1500Baht and included a meal (the meal you cooked so take care to do a good job!). The SITCA cooking lesson may be more expensive than the lessons offered at you hotel however from our experience we found this good value for money.

You also receive a recipe book containing the recipes of the meals you have prepared during the lesson and even when you have left Koh Samui, SITCA mails you a regular recipe of the month.

Try the Thai cooking experience-we loved it.

Samui Institute of Thai Cuisine

Okay many of the hotels offer Thai cooking classes but they can't beat the class that is at the Samui Institute of Thai Culinary Arts. The class is awesome. The chef that teaches you reminded me a lot of my mother. She was quite outgoing, funny, vibrant, loud yet quite informative and patient. She would joke with my husband how some of the local spices that we were using would help him grow his hair back or would increase libido. She was hilarious. You basically are the person who cooks. You have your own cutting board, ingredients, tools and you follow her as she prepares the meal. You are then instructed to your own wok and you cook up your meal. The best part of it all is at the end you sit with your fellow classmates and the instructor and you all enjoy the wonderful Thai food for lunch. And believe me the food is awesome. We made King Prawns stuffed with Minced Pork, Shrimp Sour Fish Soup with Ginger, Red Curry with Fried Tofu and Mixed Vegetables. It was great to sit with your fellow classmates that are from all over the world. We met people from Indonesia and Ireland.

There are Thai cooking classes all over Koh Samui, but in Lamai beach at Spa Samui, there are raw food and healthy lifestyle cooking classes. Great tasting, great for the body! This is a really fun thing to learn while on Koh Samui. I realize this is not why most people come here, but I come here to relax and get healthy as do many people. Samui boasts several health retreats, as well as fast food, and bars.

Hot stuff

I never thought I would be taking cooking lessons in thailand, but after getting aquainted with thai food I wanted to learn how to make a few simple dishes to whip up back home.
I highly recommend going to Sitca-Samui institute of thai culinary arts as the classes were small , informative and fun.you can also learn fruit and vegetable carving at this school.
