A nice way to see the island is by renting a car.You can drive around Samui Island in no time. Most hotel and resorts can arrange transportation for you or you can contact many small independent rentals such as Samui White Wave Travel. Also, Avis Rent A Car has a branch at Hat Mae Nam ( Tel 077 425031).
We hired a Susuki 4 wheel drive for the day and night. It was a little cramp for 6 people .So, the next day we went for the normal family car for more comfort .We paid around 1200-1500 baht a day.
Susuki 4 wheel-drive :about 1000 baht.
Toyota family car:1200-1500 baht a day.*

Cheap Jeep around the island

A good way to get around the island if you dont want to go on a tour is to rent a 4 wheel drive jeep. You are free to do as you please. You can circumnavigate the island and check out the sights. Make sure you put in enough petrol just for yourself. Otherwise you will be denoting to the rental agency or the next person.

Ko Samui is quite large. But the road system is good and so you can drive around the island stopping at different beaches, temples, waterfalls or pubs.

The rental office required a passport and most of us Malaysians were squeemished about surrendering one of our passports. Finally someone did.

There is a domestic airport is Samui but most tourists are taking the ferry from Surat Thani and some from Cha Am by boat first to Ko Tao and then island hop to Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Samui.

Rent a car and drive around the island

It's easy and cheap to rent a car in Samui. We rent it from our hotel Amari Palm Reef because there where a car rental service available (I think major hotels have that kind of service). The car was cheap (don't remember how much it was actually).

I found it really useful way of transportation when you want to explore the whole island by yourself. And it's safer than motorcycles.

You can rent a jeep or a motorcycle very easily in Samui. There are many motor vehicles rental shops along Chaweng beach road.

Note -

Samui is a very hilly island. From Laimai beach to Chaweng beach, you will drive past steep and curvy roads. The road names are indicated in numbers on the map.

Costs : - we rented a jeep for a day for 900B.
