Black Tip diving is a very professional centre. I did a 4 day Open Water PADI course in Tanote Bay and had 5 dives if I rememeber correctly. Mostly in the Bay but we also went to 'Sail Rock' which is a large roack rising out of the sea about 40m below halfway between Ko Tao and Ko Phangan. I dived to a depth of 15m I think and went all the way around the rock which was covered in fantastic anenomies and coral. There was a huge shoal of baracuda circling us and there were triggerfish, angel fish, moray eels. A distinctive feature about sail rock is its swimthrough or 'chimney' as its called. On one side there is hole which goes all the way through one section like a chimney and you can fit through and float to the top. It was a lttle unerving as there were spiky anenomies on the side and I didnt want to hit any of touch the coral so I just tried to move as little as possible, but a great experience!
There was another really good dive site around the northern end of Tanote Bay where huge rocks had fallen in to the sea and created really fun swimthroughs. The dive boat, Pia, was very good and there was a good supply of watermelon and pineapple pieces!
Equipment: All equipment is modern and supplied. You are expected to sort it out everyday into the correct tanks of chemicals.

The reason people come to Koh Tao is definitely diving. Around Koh Tao are some of the best dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand. If you prefer staying more on the surface, snorkelling is great fun, too. Nearly at every beach you can just snorkel from the beach, no need to take a boat to other places far from your accomodation. Good snorkel opportunities are at Thian Og Bay in the south (near Shark Island), at the most southern point of Mae Haad Bay as there is a ship's wreck and also on the northern end of Sairee Beach.
Equipment: Snorkels, masks and fins can be rented everywhere on the beaches or in Mae Haad for very little money.
