    Nice views: The Tropics
  • Tip Rating:
  • Becky is a northern girl. She grew up in Duluth, Minnesota which is very far north indeed. Very far north, and very cold. Not much summer up there. Certainly nothing like 90 degrees fahrenheit and 90 percent humidity. But Becky loves flowers. And she loves Thai food. And she adores massages.

So Thailand was something of a mixed bag for Becky. She loved the abundant foliage, she wolfed down her meals and she partook of many massages. But she also was plagued by sand fleas, had to put up with unruly hair due to the humidity and was sunburned even while lying under an umbrella.

    Me? I liked it all.

I had mixed feelings about the elephant safari. On one hand I felt a bit sorry for the elephants but on the other hand it was an interesting experience.

Apparently elephants were used extensively for labour but not that it's not the case anymore, elephants end up transporting tourists and being used for pleasure.

I guess most of the elephants that are used now were bred in captivity.

Island beaches: Golden sand and clear blue water!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kata Beach is a relaxing spot that is lovely for a holiday where you need to just unwind and relax.
It can get pretty busy I guess, with some big resorts in its vicinity, but its not garish like Patong.

Walking along the beach early on my last morning there in April 2004 and taking some photos of a beach scene like one would see in a travel brochure!

    2. Fantasea Seat Reservation.
The Phi Phi tour by speed bost costed us THB 1500 Per person and this package included pick up and drop off from/to the hotel, lunch, drinks along the way . Our daughter who is three yrs old was not charged.
Carolina Travels is located very close to the Banana Disco, next to Patong Beach Resort. The e mail address is carolinatour@yahoo.com

    Online Thai - English dictionary
  • Tip Rating:
  • I found this website and think it's a great resource, so thought I'd add it here in case someone needs a translation or wants to learn how to speak a bit of Thai before their visit. You can enter an english word and get not only the Thai translation, but also audio is available on many of the translations - very helpful!

    Yellow Plastic Bag
  • Tip Rating:
  • Upon arrival at Phuket airport, you will see lots of yellow smal bags hanging on the shelves. Grab one of the yellow plastic bag as it contains maps, brouchers, vouchers and discount coupons. Do take note that the information are in different languages and choose the language you are most comfortable with. The yellow plastic bags are FREE, but do take only what is required.

We could hardly find any maps when we went along Patong Beach. The map in the yellow plastic bag came in handy when we rented a car to drive around Phuket beaches and Phuket Town.

Health and weather infos: When to go?
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you go to places like Phuket, sunny days is all that matters. November to March is the dry season, with not-too-hot weather. April and May is the hottest season with limited rainfalls. Wet season starts in June till October.

I went in March, no rain at all, all sunny days, the local even told me that they haven't had rain for almost 3 months. But the problem is the cloud. Can't get very good look at the sunset. Otherwise it's fine.

Another consideration would be the cost. The price of the accomodation drop tremandously in low season (during may and Oct), and so is the number of tourists in there.
The down side is, you may be trapped in bad weather for the whole time u stayed there.

Excursions: What to do? - Island hopping
  • Tip Rating:
  • Phuket is a very well-developed tourist spot. U can almost find anything you want for in a holiday in Phuket.

Island Hopping - very popular activity in Phuket, you can see tour agent everywhere in Patong, selling 1 day / 1/2 day trips to the nearby beautiful islands. Go in the evening and book the trip next day, the price can get lower. Do negotiate. Most agent offers the same things, but the difference would be the service quality.

Popular destinations: Phi Phi Islands, the Khai Nok, Similan Island, Phanga Nga Bay, etc. Some of them are great spots for diving!
