Gibbons are often abused in Thailand. There is a black market for baby gibbons and often times bar owners will buy gibbons to entertain customers. Gibbons being very cute, they fulfill their duties until they get restless as juveniles and adults, then they start trashing the place, so the gibbons are tossed away. This center rehabilitates orphaned gibbons and teaches them how to be a real gibbon. After they acquire the necessary skills, they are released to unpopulated islands.
probably not really off the beaten path, but well worth a look in. lots of exotic birds and other things to check out. one noticable difference to western zoos, is the abscence of any barrier cages. you can walk straight up to an enlosure and put your hands through the bars,( watch out for the little kiddies fingers.)
In the least known part of Phuket, there is a waterfall with a centre where gibbons that were kept in captivity to please tourists are rehabilitated before give them the deserved freedom. It's a shady place with lots of trees and a waterfall.
A place where people think that Phuket is a tourist trap can change their mind.
Around the Panwha Cape you will find the Marine Biological Research Centre and Phuket Aquarium which has displays of several hundred exotic, grotesque and colourful marine species found in Phuket's crystal clear waters.
Near Phuket, on Thailand's west coast from Ranong down to Krabi are a large number of excellent dive sites. However, the area is sometimes tricky and can be difficult during the southwest monsoon from June to November.
Although Phuket is quite developped and touristic, there are still some "off the beaten path" experiences possible. For example, watching water buffalos standing beside the street.
On the top of a hill at the far southern tip of the island, there is an unexpected elephant shrine at which many Thais were laying garlands and saying short prayers--very neat.
