You really could just take one small suitcse with your essentials in, then after you have been shopping and restocked your wardrobe with fake billabong etc you can buy another suitcase for a fraction of the price to take it all home in!

Cotton clothes are best as its very sticky, light and loose is more comfortable!
Take sandals and a rain coat if youe dont like getting wet! the rain is warm, but it can be heavy! I actually quite liked it, it was nce after being sticky and hot!
Rash vests are a must they are only around £15 each and have a spf of 50+ great for everyone especially kids, snorkellers or anyone! ( they are like t-shirts made out of swimwear material)

no real need to panic about these, there are tons of chemists in Phuket and they all sell the top brands at a lot less than you can buy them at home!

Well, either bring lots and lots of film or an extra memory card for your digital camera. there is so much to see you will take far more pictures than you will imagine!

Just the usual cossies and towels, a water carrier/cooler are always nice for carrying your bottled water around in and for keeping it cool. You must remember your hat, the sun is a bit of a scorcher, so you will burn! Sunglasses too were a godsend, that white sand does really reflect the sun!

a sarong always comes in handy, I used my every day , as a skirt, to cover my shoulders, to cover my legs etc etc......
also take a small backpack fo any boat tripsetc, if you can get a "dry bag" these are brillant for canoeing or caving or anything to protect your valuables from getting wet!

    Evian Mineral Water Spray

I take a can of Evian spray with me every time I fly. It is not only useful for cooling off when out in the heat, but sometimes I find the air on the planes to be so dry that my throat and nostrils begin to burn and my skin and hair dries out. I just spray the Evian into the air and onto my face for instant relief.

The small, light and inexpensive can fits into any bag easily. A travel must-have.

Just to give anyone travelling to Australia from Thailand forewarning that these electric/battery operated mosquito zappers are illegal. Australia is the only country in the world to ban the importation of them and they will be confiscated from you at Customs - AFTER you've unpacked your bags and done all the paperwork.

I explained that they're so safe I couldn't even zap Steve when I wanted to, and that young children use them in Thailand, however they say that they are classified as Tazars here. Customs said that we may splash old people with water, then zap them which could cause injury.

How did they ever find out about our favourite new hobby?

    Lightweight, loose clothing

  • You will find it fairly to excessively humid here, depending on the time of year. Sudden showers of rain or perspiration will leave you wet, 'though not cold. If you wear loose, light clothing, your body will be able to breathe and the fabric will dry quickly.

    Adaptor for Thailand

Pharmacies in Phuket are great and very cheap, we buy only what we need once we get there.

Take a small umbrella, you never know when you will need it!!

The adaptor for Thailand is the same one used in Bali and Cambodia.

We always take a small Aussie powerboard with us as well, then we can charge everything at once if we like, eg mobile, camera, laptop etc.

    Adjustable/very comfortable shoes

  • My latest arrival here has just reminded me that the humidity causes a lot of fluid retention in my feet and legs until my body adjusts after a few weeks.

Ensure you bring shoes with an adjustable strap or ones that are very comfortable with some extra room in them if you are likely to be affected by it as shoes get so tight and uncomfortable otherwise.

    Sarong

  • An empty suitcase if you intend to shop!!!!

Light casual clothes and sandals. Leave the makeup, heels and designer jeans at home!!!!

All readily available. In fact toiletries and pharmacuticals are very cheap in Thailand. If you use regular prescription drugs yiu may be able to buy them over the counter at a fraction of the cost at home. My sister uses special psoriosis cream which is very expensive but was able to buy several tubes over the counter for less than 1 tube at home.

Take what you need with you.

Sarong for the beach you can wear it over bather, use it as a towel to either dry yourself or put on your bed. A 101 uses.

If you need to see a Doctor as we did the Wattana International Clinic was very good it cost me approx $US20 to see the DR and a prescription filled for antibiotics. 78 Taweewong Rd Patong 66 76 341 344 excellent service.

    Aqua socks (booties)

  • Booties are good if you want to walk/swim in the coral reefs and beaches (and if fins are not for you). My feet stays well protected, no cuts or pain from walking on shells, corals, broken glasses (yep, I saw some on the beach) and the occasional sea urchins (saw lots at the reefs, be careful)

I bought made-in-china ones for USD14 (in Singapore). Made from neoprene material, quick drying and good for use the next morning. Not too sure where it is sold in Phuket. Maybe try the dive shops.

Forget bringing shave gel or foam
  • Tip Rating:

  • I cannot stress this enough. Avoid bringing cotton Ts. They soak, become heavy and takes a long time to dry in humid climates like Phuket. Bring along light 100% synthetic material sportswear Ts. These are not cheap but they are so much lighter, packs tighter, don't weigh a ton when soaked, dries faster and dries even in rainy weather. Depending on where you come from, Dry-Tech Ts are more affordable compared to Nike's Dri-Fit and Addidas' Climatech. All my travel Ts are Dry-Tech 100% polyester jacquard T mesh.

If you use blades like I do, don't even bring any cans of shave foam, gel or cream. Use the resort/hotel supplied hair conditioner. Works just as well. Visit Badger and Blade and search the forums for "hair conditioner". I used it as preshave but now use it exclusively. Save heaps and you can eliminate one more item from your toiletries.

Get a dry bag for your photo equipment if you go for canoe tours
