Luggage & Bags

  • Samsonite Light weight luggage - Phuket
    Samsonite Light weight luggage

As most of us can only bring back 20 kilos of luggage (not counting hand luggage) make sure you have lightweight suitcases, our cases are huge but only weigh just under 5kilos. Dont bring home anything you can do without. Throw (give) away all your toiletries eg, shampoos, conditioners, deodorants etc, all these little things add up in weight. Load up your hand luggage with any heavy items you have bought, its amazing how much shopping you can cram into a backpack. Happy Shopping!!

    Packing List

  • Where ever you go in the world, I would highly recommend keeping a 'travel journal' whilst you are on your holiday. I found it to be very handy when recalling specific events on your travels, especially a few years later when hunting down info for VT. This travel journal was given to me for my 21st birthday, a week before I left for Thailand. I also stuck a lot of receipts and little bits and pieces from the trip in here.

    Umbrella/Raincoats for the kids
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are planning to visit Phi Phi Islands with kids, better carry a raincoat. The speed boats travels very fast, splashing sea water all over and the clothes are wet in no time.

If you are prone to sea sickness, it is strongly recommended to carry anti vomitting tablets. hey prove very helpful. Also, avoid having heavy breakfast/lunch before boarding the speed boat

Try to wrap the camera in a plastic bag while going for a speed boat ride.

Carry spare dresses wrapped in polythene bags to protect them from getting drenched, while doing a speed boat ride.

    Less is More
  • Tip Rating:
  • Don't overpack because you will find that you will need the extra space in your suitcase, to bring all the stuff you buy, home with you.

Less is More. Forget the stiletto's and fancy dresses and suits. All you will need on this holiday is shorts and singlets. It is hot all the time, and when it does rain you dry off in 5 minutes anyway.

Definately bring some seasickness tablets if you get seasick, as you may want to take a boat tour. If your stomach is sensitive you may want to bring some anti diarrhea tablets.

    Any camera will do.

A beach towel and sunscreen are a must if you are going to visit the beach

Be yourself, dress simple in Patong Beach

If you are travelling a number of places in Phuket like me, ensure that your luggage and bags are light. For example, as I had to move between a diving boat and hotel, I tried to make sure that the bags are light for easy carry. Trust me, you don't need to bring a lot of items to Phuket.

It's summer the whole year round in Phuket. The mantra for dressing is: be yourself, dress simple. Bring your T-shirts, shorts, bermudas, slippers and swimwear! In Patong Beach, everyone is in their beachwear, walking about!

And yes, with beautiful beaches along the coast of Phuket, do remember to bring your bikini or swimwear to enjoy the sun, the sand and the sea!

If you are a diver, it would be good to bring your diving gear. However, rest assured that you can rent the equipment and even the dive gear if you do not have them. Enjoy!

Forget bringing shave gel or foam
  • Tip Rating:
  • I cannot stress this enough. Avoid bringing cotton Ts. They soak, become heavy and takes a long time to dry in humid climates like Phuket. Bring along light 100% synthetic material sportswear Ts. These are not cheap but they are so much lighter, packs tighter, don't weigh a ton when soaked, dries faster and dries even in rainy weather. Depending on where you come from, Dry-Tech Ts are more affordable compared to Nike's Dri-Fit and Addidas' Climatech. All my travel Ts are Dry-Tech 100% polyester jacquard T mesh.

If you use blades like I do, don't even bring any cans of shave foam, gel or cream. Use the resort/hotel supplied hair conditioner. Works just as well. Visit Badger and Blade and search the forums for "hair conditioner". I used it as preshave but now use it exclusively. Save heaps and you can eliminate one more item from your toiletries.

Get a dry bag for your photo equipment if you go for canoe tours

Prepare for the rain and sun
  • Tip Rating:
  • A compact umbrella that will fit in your bag so you don't have to carry it around. Great for the sudden deluges. Also good for the powerful sun.
