  • Mai Khao Local Seafood Restaurant: The Best Seafood in the Area

    by Coleman97 Updated Apr 19, 2015

Great authentic Thai menu. Less than a mile walk from Turtle Village or a short taxi ride from the Marriott chain, Renaissance, Holiday Inn Mai Khao and Anantara. Well worth the effort when you consider the savings you get as compared to the hotel restaurants. The staff all enjoy their jobs. The owner - Alex will make you feel so welcomed you will be back. Ask to see the live seafood and don't forget your camera. My personal favorites are any of the squid dishes and Thai Papaya Salad. I have eaten papaya salad at many restaurants throughout Thailand and this is the best. Free Wifi is offered. Be sure to visit: Mai Khao Local Seafood Restaurant on Facebook. That says it all.

Favorite Dish: The Thai Papaya Salad is made from the freshest ingredients and presented better than any other I have had in Country. I prefer spicy hot in all my Thai dishes and this marks the spot. If you ask, I'm sure they can tone it down.

    Cherngtalay Markets: Cherngtalay Markets

    by Cathy&Gary Written Jan 31, 2015

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Cherngtalay markets are on Soi Bang Tao 2 which is the road that runs off the main Bang Tao road alongside Tesco Lotus. These local markets are on 2 nights a week Mondays and Thursdays and start around 4pm. The rest of the time you will just see buffalo grazing around there.

A lot of the stall holders are the same people from Phuket Weekend Markets so you will find plenty of fresh food and meats, clothing, jewellery, handmade products, delicious snacks and everything is very cheap.

So if you hear there are no authentic markets in Phuket, do not believe it as these type of markets are scattered all over Phuket Island.

There are actually 3 local markets in this area but the one I am writing about is the biggest one and they are about a 15 to 20 minute drive from Patong depending on traffic.

Navrang Mahal Indian Restaurant: Navrang Mahal Indian Restaurant

    by Cathy&Gary Updated Jan 19, 2015

Navrang Mahal is a family run Indian Restaurant in Soi Patong Tower which is off Bangla Rd. This was our second time here, the first being a few years ago and this visit was a lot better.

We were a group of 8 so ordered many different dishes to share. The samosa’s were delicious and most of the meals were very nice except for the Yoghurt Dip which had been watered down far too much and the Lamb Vindaloo which had absolutely no spice at all.

We asked for extra spice when we ordered so this dish was very disappointing. However like I have said the rest of the meals were good.

Service can be a little bit slow and prices are on the high side.

Caffe Nero by Black Canyon: Caffe Nero by Black Canyon

    by Cathy&Gary Written Jan 19, 2015

There are so many little cafes and restaurants in Jungceylon Shopping Center, so it is very handy if you are in the area for a break from shopping and some snacks.

The only reason we go to Caffé Nero at Black Canyon is for their delicious shakes and frappes and of course the spicy Issan sausages.

Prices are reasonable, we paid 770baht for 4 plates of food and 2 drinks.

Nikita's Bar and Restaurant: Nikita's Bar and Restaurant

    by Cathy&Gary Updated Jan 19, 2015

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We have been going to Nikitas regularly now for about 10 years, it is I a lovely setting along the beachfront at Rawai Beach and I have said it before, it is perfect sitting under the beautiful trees no matter how hot it is whether it be for a drink or meal.

Service can be a little bit hit and miss but it has greatly improved over the years as has the menu, prices might be a bit higher than average but it is still worth it for the views.

On previous reviews I did not recommend their big breakfast, but now I am happy to say it is a lot better.

One of my favorite meals here is the Thai style fried rice with sweetened pork, it is delicious and presented beautifully.

So if you’re looking for somewhere away from the crowds with lovely views then try Nikitas at Rawai Beach and check out their ice cream menu as well, it’s one of the best!

    Bite In: Bite In

    by Cathy&Gary Written Jan 19, 2015

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We called into Bite In for lunch at Jungceylon Shopping Centre a couple of times and service can be very much hit and miss as there only seems to be one girl working. Well this is how it was both times we were there.

The chicken ceaser salad was ok, nothing special as was the chicken ceaser wrap.

Nothing really bad to say about Bite In and it was ok for a lunch if you’re prepared to wait quite awhile for service.

They also push for Trip Advisor reviews by including paperwork with your bills asking for reviews.

Aussie Bar: Aussie Bar Bangla Road

    by Cathy&Gary Written Jan 19, 2015

We have only been to the Aussie Bar a couple of times, first time was last year and we were asked by 2 of the staff to buy them drinks, we did not expect this and found it very annoying.

However our next visit was good, the staff were friendly, helpful and the food here is very good. The Aussie Bar is over 2 levels with plenty of big screen televisions showing live sports etc, extremely popular place for Aussies.

    Hooters: Hooters

    by Cathy&Gary Written Jan 19, 2015

Now Hooters is not somewhere we would normally visit, but one day while our car was at the car wash and everything else was closed due to it being Mothers Day we needed to waste an hour so went over to Hooters for lunch. I have to say the boneless chicken wings are delicious and they are huge. They also make a very good mojito.

We did go back a couple of times with friends over the next few months. Yes it is more expensive but it is a fun place to visit and perfectly safe to take children. Service is very quick, the girls are friendly and about every half hour everything stops and they start dancing. Quite funny!

I also tried the Texas Melt, never again, very bland; I did not enjoy it at all. But the boneless chicken wings, I would go back just for them.

Flavor - Phuket Town: Flavor - Phuket Town

    by Cathy&Gary Written Jan 11, 2015

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Flavor Restaurant opened in January 2014. It is owned by our friend of many years Erik who is also the chef and his partner Kate who does absolutely everything else needed to run a restaurant.

This is the first time we have tasted Erik's cooking and I only have one comment - Sensational!!!

Everything is cooked fresh once you have ordered and Chef Eric explains the ingredients etc. Such amazing food and the prices are very reasonable.

Flavor is more suited to couples or small groups; it can seat 14 people and is best to make a booking. We were a group of 14 so Erik and Kate reorganized their tables into one long table so we could all sit together.

It was a fantastic night with excellent food, good company and great service.

Flavor is at number 66 Yaowarat Road Phuket Old Town.

    by Cathy&Gary Updated Jan 11, 2015

Tunk-Ka Cafe is situated at the top of Rang Hill not far from the centre of Phuket Town. The views are amazing out over the city to the ocean during the day and at night the lights of the city look so pretty.

Prices are very reasonable at Tunk-Ka Cafe and the restaurant is very popular with locals, expats and tourists. The menu features Thai dishes, local Phuket dishes, Seafood and a small selection of sandwiches.

We have lost count of the amount of times we have been to Tunk Ka Cafe over the years, it is a favourite and we highly recommend you visit this beautiful restaurant.

Pak Lak Issan BBQ: Pak Lak Issan BBQ

    by Cathy&Gary Written Jan 11, 2015

Pak Lak Issan BBQ is a table top style BBQ where you cook all the food yourself. There is a huge amount of delicious fresh meats, seafood and vegetables to choose from and also a selection of cooked food such as chicken wings, French fries etc for those fussy eaters.

These barbeques are a lot of fun and definitely worth going to. Watch out for some of those homemade sauces, they are extremely spicy.

Pak Lak Issan BBQ is on 50 Pee Rd, Nanai Patong.

The easiest way to describe how to get there is heading north to south go past Don's BBQ on Nanai Rd then the next 7/11 you see turn left, drive up the steep hill for about 100 meters and you will see Pak Lak BBQ on your right.

I think the price was 189baht each for the BBQ.

For the best breakfast in Phuket the Islander Bar and Restaurant cannot be beaten. It has been a favorite of ours for nearly 20 years and prices for food and drinks are excellent.

The all day Big Breakfast for 220 Baht includes Cumberland sausages, English short back bacon, Eggs cooked any style, baked beans, fried tomatoes, sautéed potatoes, toast with butter and jam, tea or coffee and fruit juice.

The menu consists of English, Thai and International food with dome delicious homemade desserts, all the serves are huge and the beef and lamb is imported from Australia and New Zealand.

The Islander Bar & Restaurant has great staff, is family friendly and has good clean western toilets. There are quite a few televisions and most sports are shown live. We highly recommend dropping by for a drink or meal when you are craving comfort food.

You & Me Restaurant Otop Markets: You & Me Restaurant Otop Markets

    by Cathy&Gary Updated Jan 9, 2015

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This was not our first time to You and Me restaurant but once again they are not consistent. Most of our meals here have been delicious but there is always something that spoils it.

One time it was a squid dish that was like trying to eat strips of leather and this time it was a pork dish that was so fatty and greasy it could not be eaten.

Such a shame as service is fast and friendly and the rest of our meals were good. Prices have gone up so it is not the cheap place it use to be.

You and Me restaurant is next to Otop Markets at the southern end of Rat-u-Thit Road.

Cafe Opera Kata Beach: Cafe Opera Kata Beach

    by Cathy&Gary Written Jan 8, 2015

We enjoyed our dinner at Café Opera so much with friends that we went back again a couple of times. This is such a lovely place with a great atmosphere and live music playing in the back ground.

The décor is quite quirky with old treadle sewing machines as tables, carvings and very comfortable chairs.

The meal sizes are huge, prices are very reasonable and their western meals are excellent. The Thai meals were nice, not fantastic jut nice. Make sure you try the Crab spring rolls, they are delicious.

We really enjoyed our visits to Café Opera and will definitely go back.

    Kroktong Restaurant: Kroktong Restaurant

    by Cathy&Gary Updated Jan 8, 2015

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Crok Tong Issan Restaurant is owned by our good friend Bee and her sister. It has now moved to a better location on Soi Wat Klong Bang which runs off Prabaramee Rd in Patong .

The food is all Issan and this restaurant is very popular due to the good food, friendly service, prices and their spicy chili sauces which are all home made. Our 5 dishes were 500b baht, Leo is 50baht a bottle and Singha 60baht.

If you are there at the right time of year you might also be lucky to have a taste of some very expensive Bee Larvae!. Make sure you try the Pepper Prawns dish, it is sensational and the sauce with the duck would have to be the hottest sauce I have ever had.

The food here is not toned down for tourists, so if you are after some authentic Issan food then Crook Tong is the place to go.

The restaurant opens at 6pm and closes anytime up to 4am.
