Phuket Weekend Market: From fried chicken to dvd's this market has it all

There are hundreds of stalls, loud music, hordes of shoppers, and bbq smoke wafting through the market. It's a fun place to go and shop among the locals. It's a great place to refurnish your home, rejuvenate your wardrobe, or just eat. I go for the food personally. The food here is a great place to try out many different types of street stall food. It's cheap and tasty. You can have a full dinner just walking from stall to stall trying a little of each!

What to pay: Bargain. Don't be shy it's all part of the fun. Sometimes the merchant will raise the price 300%. You have to play the game, but be friendly and if it already seems like a good deal than don't push it.

Top Chareon Optical: Optical frames

I went to Top Chareon Optical in Patong last August and bought 2 frames for THB4000. I know the frames were marked at a higher price, but can't remember how much. The THB4000 price was "discount price". I am really happy with the quality and I get a lot of comments about how great both pairs look. One pair are metal frames and the other pair are plastic. I didn't bother with lenses, I did that when I returned home - but I am sure they do lenses also. There are top Chareon Optical stores everywhere in the Patong area.

What to buy: Optical needs

Various: Get a pair of glasses

There is a large number of opticians especially in Patong, it is a very competitive market for glasses etc. I know people who have used the main ones such as P&P and Top Charoen and have been very pleased in every case both with price and service. Definitley cheaper than the UK, but I do not know your home country so I don't know if this will be the case for you. From memory it takes about three days, they will also include a free eye test to verify any prescription.

Regards

John

Jungceylon: New Shopping Mall in Patong

This shopping mall is quite new in Patong. Nicely designed inside and outside with many shops of international and local brands. According to me it is too western for Phuket, but it is one of the new tourist attraction in town. If you don't enjoy bargaining with locals in local markets, you should spend your time in Jungceylon. Nice restaurants are also available inside.

What to buy: You can find anything you need.

What to pay: Avarage prices, but higher than local shops

Local markets in Patong

One of the local markets

You can find a lot of stalls in Patong selling men's clothes and women's clothes. Some of them come in clusters, say 20 of them in the same area. This gives you a better bargaining power because if you can't get the price you want in one stall, you can ask another. If you are good at bargaining, you will get big discounts.

What to buy: T-shirts, hats, bags, shorts, swimwear, trousers, shoes

What to pay: You will get the best price if you bargain

Banzaan is the wet market located in Patong. If you arrive early in the morning, you can buy fresh seafood, fruits and vegetables at very reasonable prices. Even if you don't want to buy anything, you can take some nice pictures of stalls inside.

What to buy: Fresh fruits, vegetables and seafood.

What to pay: Reasonable prices compared to touristic shops

No. 4: Designer Clothing

This shop is the 4th clothing shop as you walk up Patong Beach from Holiday Inn. The owners are Thai, which makes for a nice change. They are not pushy or aggressive and will give you a better price than others by far, for the same gear.

They have a room out the back that's airconditioned, with a large selection of gear to choose from for both men and women. Make sure you ask to check that out.

What to buy: This gear really does appear to be the authentic stuff, the quality, linings and tags, even price tags look so genuine, it makes me wonder whether it's the gear you hear about which is out of the same factory as the real deal, just after hours.

There is Abercrombie and Fitch along with another trendy name I can't remember the name of, I'll put it up when I check with my friend who bought the stuff. The gear is mostly vintage look appliqueed t-shirts, jeans, some embroidered ladies shorts and plenty of other trendy gear.

The owners names are Khun Nong and Khun Jess, they are very friendly and pleasant people who will give you the best price.

Bargaining

One thing I have learned about shopping in Asian countries is that they usually inflate the price by around 300%, sometimes more.

This is not always the rule however, so what I do is to value the item in my currency first, then factor around that price. Usually my first offer is 1/4 or less. Costs are far lower in Asian countries, so you really shouldn't be paying the same prices as you would at home.

I also find it better to shop where the locals do rather than at tourist filled areas, as the prices are inflated there. For instance, you will get much better prices in Phuket Town or, surprisingly, at Promthep Cape, rather than at Patong Beach.

What to buy: Silk tablecloths, fabric and bedspreads, some lovely carved wood products. (be careful about Customs in your country - Australia is very strict about wood products). Pearls, shells, gems and silver are also widely available in Thailand.
