Dive boat

Visibility is very good 20-25 metres. Most of the dive sites are in shallow waters and boat journey times are short. Sea life is rich although we didn't come across many big fish during our dives. Some good wrecks but you will need to be a proficient diver at depth to maximise your bottom time.

No real need to bring your own gear, i usually just travel with my own mask, snorkel, knife and fins and rent the rest of the gear when on a backpacking trip.

We did a day trip from Phuket to Racha Yai. It's a hour or hour and half boat ride to this island. Even though we went during the monsoon season-the visibility was quite good. Both dives were around 18-20 meters. The first dive we saw an octopus, moray eels and lots of fish. Very healthy coral. Second dive we saw a small wreck. They did a good job was suspicious at first due to the large number, but after our first briefing by the top divemaster, he divided us into small groups-usually 4 to 5 people per group. Very professional and friendly. Their boats have air compressors on board-so they could fill the tanks and you wouldn't mess with your bcds and other equipment.

We went diving with Santana diving (which were great) and went on three dives, two at Koh Doc Mai and another by an island (Koh Bida Nok) off of Phi Phi Le. As it's August and their off season. During this time, it may be better to dive Racha Yai, since it's sheltered. Where we dived, there was a little bit of current. Very rough around Phi Phi islands. Got really banged up trying to get into the boat. Visibility around 10 meters or so. Saw lionfish, shrimp, scorpion fish, large colorful schools of fish. Beautiful large pink sea fans at Koh Doc Mai. The highlight of the dive was seeing a gentle and stunning leopard shark, which swam right up to us. A cobia fish accompanied the large shark, which is rare, since they usually swim with whale sharks. Sadly, we didn't see any whale sharks.

talking about our dive

We went on a 2 day diving trip with santana divers, i did 8 dives also all your food and drink was included , beer you had to pay for, we had acomadtion on phi phi and breakfast at the hotel , very good trip lots to see , my wife whos dosnt dive swam to the beach as in the film, she said it was very nice, ,

I took my own regs computer fins mask and hired my bcd wet suit and tanks and weights,

known reef break on Phuket

I have been going to Phuket now for the last 4 years and intend to return again...One of the main reasons why i go to Phuket besides the obvious that it is a gorgeous tropical destination is that Phuket does have good surf(not great but good)and it is possible to surf good waves at my favourite spot alone or with just a few out....

I always travel anywhere and everywhere with my boards....It is possible to hire boards in Phuket but if you're fussy like me,then bring your own....Doesn't cost any extra,just a hassle carting your board around.....But you'll be so glad you brought your own trusty board when the waves turn on....
