One of the major assets of Phuket as a flourishing vacation resort is its abundance of diving destinations both in its vicinity and off islands several hours boat ride away, all offering a fantastic underwater world of tropical fishes and coral formations, so exotic and colorful. Much more popular are trips to islands lying to the south and east of Phuket about 30 minutes to 2 hours away by motor boat including Coral Island (Ko He) which offers a dive all year round and has very beautiful natural scenery; Ko Racha, which has dives of down to 30 meters; Shark Point, a favorite sleeping spot of leopard sharks and stingrays; Ko Dok Mai which offers an impressive wall dive and a series of cave dives; and Ko Phi Phi where you can see white tip sharks, stingrays and moray eels besides colorful reef fishes. Truly world class diving sites are located further away including Ko Similan, Ko Surin, Richelieu Rock and Burma Banks. Despite their long distances, tours are organized by some agencies in Phuket regularly during the dry season. All the first three island groups are marine national parks which offer magnificent coral gardens. Burma Banks being the farthest and newest, is in the best condition as a diving site. There are a lot of dive schools in Phuket, all staffed with qualified instructors who are members of PADI or NAUI, and provided with all sorts of modern equipment. Leave a Comment Theme: Scuba Diving

 | | | | water sports: Meet the family, see the resemblance? | | | | | |
Diving is a great activity, every time. And pretty much every diver wants to get close to the big stuff like Whale Sharks. Not many around, but they are there and are seen around the Similans now and again. Last year the day I missed seeing one near Samui (the guys who went around the rock the other way saw a 5m one!), I came ashore and got a text from my friend in Phuket saying what I'd missed there too. A biggie. It's not only these leviathans that make this a haven though, the variety and quality of life around here is wonderful. And the dive teams I went with were all great for getting the most contact with the beasties. Safely.
I didn't have any gear with me and rented every time. It was always good and well looked after. I think a loose weight belt clip and slightly chewed mouthpiece was about the limit I found. I went with Dive Master for a live aboard and Dive Asia for day-dives, both were great, helpful and friendly. Thanks Guys, especially Bowie (DM Off), Pum (DA Off) and Tik (DA DM). | | | | water sports: Scuba Diving Excursion to Ko Racha Yai | | | | | |
In May'05, my wife and I took a daytrip scuba diving excursion from Phuket to Ko Racha Yai, a small island to the south. We used South Siam Divers, who offer a 2 dive package for only 1,900 Baht per person. The dive boat was comfortable and the facilities were adequate. Breakfast and lunch were provided. The divers were broken up into small groups and assigned a dive master. Our dive master was Swedish, and he did a good job. Water visibility off Ko Racha Yai was quite good that day, the coral was relatively healthy, and there was plenty of aquatic life to see. On our second dive we saw a wreck of a small boat. Overall a good experience and good value for money.
If you own your own gear, then obviously you should bring it. Otherwise, you can rent a full set of gear from them for only 500 Baht. Definitely bring your own mask and snorkel, fins too if you got em. Bring towels. They will provide motion sickness tablets. Lastly, bring an underwater camera! The company can provide transfers to and from the pier.
