More excursions and shows: Exploring REAL Jungle at Khao Sok National Park

    Elephant in Khao Sok National

Exploring gorgeous Khao Sok National Park (said by many to be the most beautiful national park in Thailand) was definitely my very best day on our Thailand trip a few weeks ago. Actually, I think it was one of the best days of my life. We joined a tour group (can't remember the name of the company but it is the Khao Sok tour offered in many brochures on Phuket for one or two days) which picked us up at our hotel and drove us to the park. This wasn't one of those lame tours I've read about where you go to some sort of farm and have a little elephant ride and see a show - far from that! First we went river canoeing with a guide paddling for us. The park's mountains are great limestone karsts covered with trees, raising sharply above you like the mountains seen in Chinese paintings and the vegetation is so lush and thick and the canoes glide through many nice cool shady stetches canopied by the truly giant trees and bamboo. I was very pleased that the ride lasted much longer than I thought it would. We did see some wildlife. Our canoes then landed at a jungle lodge where we finished that part of the tour and had a very good lunch (included in the price) before elephant trekking. All the elephants seemed to be very well-cared for and to respect and have affection for their handlers - the animals were very sweet and I was amazed by their gentleness and intelligence. The entire trek may have lasted about 1.5 hours (not taxing on the elephants) - it was simply gorgeous going through the jungle. I think the tour cost about 60 US dollars per person and it was definitely worth the cost for the experience. There weren't any mosquitoes (this was in very late December). You will want to wear a pair of trainers or sports sandals (these would be better if you want to swim in the river as there are rocks on the bottom). Don't wear flip-flops as you have to go down an inclined path to get to the river. Not a terrible one though. You don't have to be very fit for this tour since it pretty much just requires sitting.

  • Directions: North of Phuket. It took 1.5-2 hours to get there, but I would have been happy to go much further, it was that beautiful!

    Bowling
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bowling - an indoor activity that you can do esp if the weather is not too good for an outdoor activity or at night. Located at the 3rd level of Ocean Plaza. They have glow in the dark theme at night for a more exciting game. Food and other beverages are available. Price per game is around 120THB

    Phang Nga Bay: Canoeing
  • Tip Rating:
  • Canoeing is one fun activity esp for group. If you avail a package tour...canoeing is usually included in the package. You will be given about an hour to explore the island. At first, someone from the tour company will join you to be familiarize with the place..then on your next canoeing activity you will be given the chance to explore the island on your own. Maximum 3 persons per canoe.

More excursions and shows: Orchid Farm and Butterflies
  • Tip Rating:
  • Orchids are wonderful and delicate - and where I come from, mostly too pricey to buy... If you are flying with Thai Air you get at least one flower as a present.... so this must be the typical Thai flower... Phuket has a big Orchid farm with lots of different species. They make quite a view. And through them there are butterflies torkeling from flower to flower. You can also buy them here or let them ship home. The last chance to do that is at the airport BTW. I think they also have a shop there.

More beaches and caves: Cave in the sea
  • Tip Rating:
  • Another highlight in the Pha Nga Bay: the drive- through cave. The Islands and Rocks in the water here are made of limestone. Limestone is a very soft rock and water easily wears it of, especially if it is a little sour, too. So it is no wonder that many rocks at sea level are caved in. Many tours visit this cave. I think the most fun would be with the sea kayaks. You can rent them and paddle yourself. Not only through the cave of course, but also around the many small islands in the area.

Phi Phi islands: PhiPhi+Khai by speedboat Part 1
  • Tip Rating:
  • Me at Maya Bay (The Leonardo Beach) - Phuket
Me at Maya Bay (The Leonardo
    Beach)
    by picknick

We booked a tour to PhiPhi Island by speedboat for 1200THB per person. The normal price listed on the brochere is 2800THB per person. We took a package with Seaway. There are other speedboat packages from other companies too, eg. Andaman Rangers. You can book the package for the next day from any travel agents in Phuket. They all offer different prices, so bargain. The tour brings us to a few sights on the big and small Phi Phi Islands, with 2 stops for snorkelling, one stop on Maya Bay for swimming, one stop on Tonsai Bay for lunch, and finally a 1hr stop on Khai Island beach for swimming. A minibus picked us up from our hotel in Patong beach at 8am. We arrived at Boat Lagoon Marina, where we have some briefing and rented fins for 100THB/pair. Snorkel & lifejackets are provided free. Then it's off to sea on the 23 seater speedboat. The first stop of the tour is Maya Bay, on Ko Phi Phi Leh. This is where Leonardo DiCaprio shot the movie The Beach. This place has not been the same ever since. Rows of speedboats are parked at the beach, with a small area left for swimmers. This is a picture of me at Maya Bay on the smaller Phi Phi Island.

Temples: W(h)at is that? Phukets Temples
  • Tip Rating:
  • A Wat is a Buddhist Temple. There are quite a few on Phuket island. Examples are Wat Phra Tong, Wat Naka, Wat Chalong and many more. In Wat Chalong southwest of Phuket Town they worship the statues of Monks that were doing special under Rama V. In Wat Phra Tong I took this picture of a stone roof. I like the fine ornaments of the stile here. On other places the have wood roofs -mostly red with golden edges. It also pays to look for those Wats that are not named on the maps. There are real treasures out there! Show some respect when visiting them. They are free to visit when they are not celebrating. Take off your shoes before entering a building.

Phang Nga Bay: PhangNga Bay canoe+Naka Island Part 1
  • Tip Rating:
  • We booked a trip to PhangNga Bay on Christmas eve. We booked through a Phuket travel agent, selecting the PhangNga package from a company call Holiday Sea Canoe. The cost of the trip per person is 1400THB. List price printed on the brochere is 2500THB/pax. We were picked-up at 745am & transported by minibus to Ao-Poh Pier, where we boarded a boat to PhangNga Bay. First stop is to Koh Panak, into a sea cave call the "Bat Cave". In this cave, you can see many bats hanging from the top of the cave. Kayaks are used to transport us into the caves. 2 person and 1 paddler on each kayak. No paddling required, the paddler will do all the work. Torchlights are provided as our kayak goes into the dark cave.

Phang Nga Bay: Sea Gypsies - town on the water
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you make an Excursion to the Pha Nga Bay, you will not only see James Bond Island, but also visit the swimming city of the Sea Gypsies. Not the whole city is actually built into the water, one small part (where the mosque stands) is on a small island. Behind the Mosque you can see a big tree. This one is only still standing because it is an Iron Tree - and the wood of them does not swim. Most of the sea gypsies are muslim (hence the mosque). They live of the fruits of the sea - that they do also sell and of the tourists that come visiting them. If you arrive you will soon have a whole bulk of people around you, trying to sell you something. Just say "no" if you don't want anything. It is also easy to get lost in the many small alleys ... stay with the group if you have not enough time.
