Phuket town: Phuket Town Night Markets
  • Tip Rating:
  • I have visited these markets three times now and I have thoroughly enjoyed them each time. The people I have taken with me (including guys who hate markets) have all loved the experience and are eager to return - two of them have even said they could happily visit these markets nightly!!

The markets are predominantly VERY fresh fruit, vegetables, seafood, pork and tasty, varied food. There are also dried foods such as spices and fish. So many kinds of food at bargain prices. The foods are really interesting as well as absolutely delicious!

Make sure you don't eat before you visit as it is a great way to eat dinner. Most food goes for about 10 baht per serve. The best time to visit is from around 5.00-7.30pm. There is a later-night market on Ranong Road itself from around 9.00pm. Day markets also run from this area with more of the clothing.

It is a great place to see the locals' way of life in Phuket. Some of the more interesting choices are; deep fried cockroaches and chickens bottoms on skewers. There are butchered frogs for sale along with a few other less palatable choices.

Phi Phi islands: Phi Phi by speedboat: Too much beauty in one day!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you have time for only one day tour, please take this one!! Booked our tour through Phuket-travel.com, comes with the Phuket Discovery Package but we upgraded ours from the tour by Expressboat to the tour by Speedboat and trust me, you will want to, too!! The extra money you'll be paying is well worth the difference of taking this tour by speedboat than by the big expressboat that will get you to the islands twice the amount of time it'll take you to get there when on a speedboat. Plus, i have heard a lot of horror stories of people getting sick on the expressboat but thankfully, I didn't see any of that with our speedboat. Also, I didn't see any of the expressboats dock into the smaller coves so I assume that they can only see from afar what people on the speedboat get to enjoy.

Going to the Boat Lagoon is about 45 minutes, upon getting here, you are greeted and asked to try on flippers for snorkelling. Don't lose this as you will have to pay a fee if you do, same goes for the masks they will give on the boat. After you have your flippers, you are asked to wait in the lobby where free instant tea and instant coffee is served.

At the Boat Lagoon, while everyone else were having their free coffee and tea at the lobby while waiting for the boat, we had an insider tip from one of the people staying there that we could go up to the rooftop and have a great view of the Marina from there so up we went and it was indeed a great spot to take photos of the many boats and yachts docked here. Beautiful on a clear sunny day!

There were about 20 of us on the speedboat. Try to get a seat in the front so you get first view of the destinations plus a healthy dose of seawater splash! We had a fantastic funny guide, Mr. Boi and given fresh fruits and softdrinks the whole time. Got to see Maya Bay (from The Beach), snorkelling near Bamboo Island, a glimpse of Viking Cave, Monkey Beach and Khai Nai.

This was definitely the best trip ever!!

Phang Nga Bay: PhangNga Bay canoe+Naka Island Part 8
  • Tip Rating:
  • Next stop of this tour, James Bond Island, where Roger Moore filmed Man with the Golden Gun many years ago.

We are on Kao Ping Gan. The name means literally leaning mount. It is really a huge rock split in two; the smaller half slid down and the remaining one now appears to be leaning. You can see the huge split when on the island.

The pointed island behind Lifoong is Kao Tapoo or James Bond Island, it is in a little bay of Kao Ping Gan and a popular tourist destination. Tapoo means nail.

We have a short stop here, and then it's back to the boat, with lunch waiting on board.

More beaches and caves: Rawai Beach

  • Rawai beach is so different from other famous beaches I have visited. It seems a site of fisherman, many fishing boats on beach and I have seen many locals there (other beaches I saw mostly more tourists than locals). There are many restaurants (open restaurant - local style) bungalows, and handicraft shops. There are also the charter boats to the nearby islands. I think this beach is not suit for swimming but good to see local lifestyle and enjoy fresh seafood.

More beaches and caves: Rawai Beach & Sunshine Bar
  • Tip Rating:
  • Rawai Beach & Sunshine Bar

We had Mr. Mors father pick the 9 of us up in the Phuket Pro Dive Ute (just like a big tuk tuk) and take us to Rawai Beach for dinner.

We went to the little stalls and picked out what seafood, drinks etc we wanted, then went and sat on our mats on the beach. It’s a lovely setting and not full of tourists, very relaxing.

The bill for 4 of us came to about 1200Baht, this included seafood cocktails, steamed rice, fried rice, whole BBQ mackerel (absolutely delicious) chili octopus, oysters, a pork dish plus 4 beers and a couple of Bacardi breezers and soft drinks. Bargain!!

After dinner we went over the road to the Sunshine Bar for a couple of hours, what a fun place, the girls that work there sing their hearts out. It’s the sort of place when you have had a few drinks (maybe a few too many) and want a sing-along, everyone joins in.

More excursions and shows: Crocodile Farm
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Crocodile Farm is also on Phuket island and close to Phuket Town.
Our driver (that we hired with car for one day) brought us here.

Crocodiles are grown here for their skin and for their meat (which I think is nothing special, really).

They are hold in bigger groups of about the same size together - so they won't eat each other, I think.
Also: they smell quite bad, I have to say.

    Muai Thai (Kick Boxing)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Muai Thai a famous sport in Thailand. As for Phuket, they have matches almost everynight and they advertised it by a loud microphone while they parade on the streets.

So, if you plan to watch a Muai Thai fight for real , visit the Boxing Stadium located in Bangla Road.

    ATV
  • Tip Rating:
  • ATV is one of the must try activity in Phuket. Most of the tour operators offer a package tour which include this activity but if you prefer a longer time of riding and more adventure you can avail this seperately. Price range - 2,600 & up

As for package tour, you will only be given 10 minutes ride per person. Maneuvering the vehicle will be a bit hard esp for first timers.

Caution: this activity is a bit dusty and muddy :-) so dont forget to bring extra clothes.

James Bond island: James Bond Island
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are at Phuket, you should take your time for a trip to here.
James Bond Island (yes, as well known from the film "The Man with the golden Colt") makes an interesting sight.

Here you have the typical landscape (I should better say "seascape") with the many small islands with the high tower-like rock structures.

There are different ways to go there, one is by jonge (dschunke) , others with sea-kajaks etc.

On the trip with the jonge you will also visit the sea-gipsys and a drive-through cave. (see next tips).

On James Bond island itself- which is really not so big, you can explore some hlaf-caves and walk halfway around it. Half, because there is no possibility to surround it on foot. The cliffs are too stepp in places.
On the beach there are heaps of little stands for tourists.
