have you ever been swimming or snorkeling and seen the myriad fish, coral, and other things living under the sea and wished you could get closer? well, you can and it's much easier than you might think. in just 1 day you can learn the basics of scuba diving and go on your first accompanied dive with a licensed scuba instructor and master diver. the "discover scuba diving" course includes some initial basics - like how to use the equipment, proper techniques, hand signals - and is followed by shallow water practice. depending on your ability you might just find yourself on your first open water dive getting up close to some of the most amazing sealife. perhaps the biggest thing you'll experience is the sense of calm that comes from gliding along a reef with colorful fish and nothing but the sound of your own bubbles to distract your thoughts. this was the highlight of my 1-week trip to bangkok and phuket! there are many opportunities to learn scuba diving in phuket, but i recommend a private instructor. some people get a bit anxious wearing 40 lbs of gear plus a wetsuit and mask. also, diving can be a blast but it is a sport to be taken seriously. learning in a group might work for skiing but when it comes to being able to breathe underwater there's no margin for error. for these reasons having your own personal instructor is the best way to go, and in phuket i suggest GEKKO SCUBA DIVERS. your private instructor will be Marcia and she is not only an extremely accomplished diver but she's also an amazingly sharp and patient teacher. oh, and she's a blast to be around. arrange your discover scuba experience by contacting VT user 'quero'. she handles everything; all you have to do is show up. GEKKO SCUBA DIVERS also arranges other scuba activities, including complete certification and dive trips for experienced divers. my only regret was that i wasn't able to remain in phuket long enough to finish my certification. if i have the chance i will go back to phuket to finish my training with Marcia. she's the best!
