Kamala Beach, Phuket
Kamala Beach is more famous as the Site where the Phuket Fantasea Show is Located but it is also one of the beaches in Phuket Province although it is not as known or as popular as the beaches south of it, like the nearest one which is Patong beach. Kamala beach is both a beach for swimmers and is a fishing village and it some areas have rocky formations and the water here is more rough than in patong. Kamala has become a favoured spot for retirees and other longer-term visitors staying in small hotels, villas and apartment rentals around the village. the beach is along the road to phuket airport and is just 7 kilometers north of patong beach. There are very few beach beds and other activities around the beach here.
Kamala beach is just north of Patong beach. I was in Kamala the first time in 1991, and have been there several times later. The road from Patong to Kamala was a steep forest road without asphalt paving. Kamala beach was at that time deserted without hotels. And it was only one beach stall where you could buy beer and coke. (Take a look at the latest photo).
The beach is much more developed now, but still calm compared with Patong. You will find a large resort and many smaller hotels along the beach. Villas and apartment rentals for retirees and longer-term visitors are nestled around the village.
The 2004 tsunami hit Kamala beach very hard.
This beach was hardly hit by the tsunami in December 26, 2004 and it's actually almost recovered from the disaster by now. It's a nice, quiet and laid-back beach. If you want a peaceful time, this is one of the beaches you would want to go.
Just 10 minutes north of Patong is the more laid back and family orientated Kamala Beach.
Kamala beach is one of the largest and more popular beaches of Phuket. It is more peaceful here and without all the go-go bars and noise which makes it a perfect for family with young kids to hang around and relax at the beach.
The Kamala beachfront is lined with public park area and natural Casuarina forest. The beach stretches across two mile crescent on the west coast.
This beach was even less crowded but the waves were much much bigger and dangerous. I did spot few guys doing Kayaking in such ferocious sea. This view we got from a view point along the road from Patong Beach to Surinn Beach and was excellant.
Kamala Beach is a ten minutes drive from Patong Beach. It is a quiet beach with only a few bars to enjoy and relax during day or in the evening. Hopefully, it'll stay like this and not be absorbed into mass tourism, like some beaches already did.
quiet tranquil beach with nice geusthouses, small beach restaurants and bars
not so corwded as patong beach
This very unique artwork is located right next to the Memorial Monument at Kamala Beach. It's really beautiful and artistic. :-)
For just THB50, you get to rent the chair for the whole day! It's super cheap. :-) The local guy is really friendly and nice.
