More beaches and caves: Cave in the sea
  • Tip Rating:
  • Another highlight in the Pha Nga Bay: the drive- through cave. The Islands and Rocks in the water here are made of limestone. Limestone is a very soft rock and water easily wears it of, especially if it is a little sour, too. So it is no wonder that many rocks at sea level are caved in. Many tours visit this cave. I think the most fun would be with the sea kayaks. You can rent them and paddle yourself. Not only through the cave of course, but also around the many small islands in the area.

More beaches and caves: 3 Beaches View Point
  • Tip Rating:
  • The "Three Beaches View Point" is located in the almost southest point of Phuket Island. From here you have a good look over the three beaches north of you: first one is Kata Noi Beach, then Karon Beach and the one with the high tower is Patong Beach. BTW this Patong Tower is built on sand - and the problem is, that it is slightly tilted now - and getting worse. If you are looking for a (cheap?) flat to buy: they still have some in the upper levels.... All three beaches have hotels and accomodations for the Tourists. You can see, that even if you are not located in Patong, you can go there easy enough if you want.

More beaches and caves: Nai Yang Beach - Phuket's Best-kept Secret
  • Tip Rating:
  • Nai Yang Beach is a very beautiful beach set in a national park at the north of the island on the west coast. Phuket's locals like to visit it. If you are looking for gorgeous nature, a laid-back atmosphere, a romantic setting and very friendly people (kids want to shake your hand and people say hello as they pass) - do consider this beach! The beach itself is quite long and bordered by pine trees and surrounded by the national park (this means peace and no tall ugly buildings). Along a section of the beach are sun chairs and cute little beachside bars and restaurants under shady trees with extensive menus, great food and you eat right on the beach with your feet in the sand! Very romantic at night. The beach never gets crowded and it you leave the middle part where the restaurants are, you can have a large section of the beach all to yourself! There is also a small coconut tree-covered "island" that you can walk to during low tide (the snorkelling reef is on the other side). If you walk to the opposite side of the beach around a small headland, you will come to Mai Kao Beach, which is pretty much deserted. Nai Yang is conveniently located next to the airport, it is fun to watch the planes landing (they are not noisy) as they look as if they are flying right into the forest. There are some diving places, travel agents, massage places and tailors, convenience and souvenier shops and internet cafes. I also read in another person's travel description of this beach that there are only 2 hotels. This isn't correct, there are more hotels and also private bungalows. The park service is busy rebuilding their's. But in highest season book ahead because we got one of the last availabilities when we just showed up (xmastime). Everything behind the beach is in a very natural setting amidst tropical plants and trees - no noisy streets. Excellent job done cleaning up the tsunami damage - everything looked great, only the park service is busy rebuilding some of their bungalows.

  • Directions: Only 5 or so minutes from Phuket's airport! On the northwest coast.

More beaches and caves: John Gray's Starlight Canoe
  • Tip Rating:
  • It was my best Phuket experience!!! You'll take canoe rides through caves to lagoons inside the islands. This is really amazing! I felt as if I was in a lost world, as if a pterodactyl was going to show from beyond a rock! You'll hear monkey and bird cries, you'll see the wildlife of the islands, bats on the cave ceiling, plankton shimmering in the dark water of the night sea! You'll have your own Loy Krathong festival and the guides will teach you how to make your own Krathongs (wreaths made of banana leaves and layers of banana tree trunk), which you will put on the water in the lagoon at night... Very romantic!

  • Rawai beach is so different from other famous beaches I have visited. It seems a site of fisherman, many fishing boats on beach and I have seen many locals there (other beaches I saw mostly more tourists than locals). There are many restaurants (open restaurant - local style) bungalows, and handicraft shops. There are also the charter boats to the nearby islands. I think this beach is not suit for swimming but good to see local lifestyle and enjoy fresh seafood.

More beaches and caves: Rawai Beach & Sunshine Bar
  • Tip Rating:
  • Rawai Beach & Sunshine Bar We had Mr. Mors father pick the 9 of us up in the Phuket Pro Dive Ute (just like a big tuk tuk) and take us to Rawai Beach for dinner. We went to the little stalls and picked out what seafood, drinks etc we wanted, then went and sat on our mats on the beach. It’s a lovely setting and not full of tourists, very relaxing. The bill for 4 of us came to about 1200Baht, this included seafood cocktails, steamed rice, fried rice, whole BBQ mackerel (absolutely delicious) chili octopus, oysters, a pork dish plus 4 beers and a couple of Bacardi breezers and soft drinks. Bargain!! After dinner we went over the road to the Sunshine Bar for a couple of hours, what a fun place, the girls that work there sing their hearts out. It’s the sort of place when you have had a few drinks (maybe a few too many) and want a sing-along, everyone joins in. More beaches and caves: At least make a day tour the island

  • I stayed in town. In the first day I made a day tour, get around the island by local transport (Tuk Tuk). As about 70% of the island is mountainous so all along the way is in great landscape, great view, scene of mountain and sea view. I visited many beaches, very beautiful and famous in the west / south of the island, but peaceful, quieter along east coast. Some places is rather touristy and some just easy living areas, different in just few kms far apart. I enjoyed so much traveling around and met many nice locals. beside getting around the island, also good opportunity to see some other attractions such as some beautiful temples, the town is also nice, particularly around Ta Lang street. In the last day I even got a rental car drive it by myself. I recommend you to take at least one day tour the island then only just hang out at one area. It's worth!

More beaches and caves: Nai Harn Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • This picture is taken at Nai Harn Beach. This attractive beach is quieter and more peaceful compared to other beaches. It is popular for swimming and as a yacht anchorage during the dry season. In the evening or during the wet season, powerful waves are common, making swimming dangerous. A regular bus service runs between the beach and Phuet Town during the daytime. Nai Harn lies slightly north of Prom Thep, at the southern tip of Phuket.

  • Afternoon siesta for locals - Phuket
    Afternoon siesta for locals

I really enjoyed my visit to the Rawai fishing village and found it highly fascinating. The only way to see it is to take a walk around. I like to see how life really is for local people. This village is mainly Buddhist, which is unusual for a fishing village. Usually fishing villages are predominantly Muslim, as they are the people that came up from Malaysia in search of new fishing grounds. The Buddhists came from the north in search of new rice growing areas. Today there are some Buddhist fishermen and some Muslim farmers. The more moderate Muslims blend well with the Buddhists, but otherwise they tend to stick to specific areas. There are a few stalls, but mainly fish, crabs, crayfish and bug-type things (sea ones) for sale to locals. You will find seashells and pearls for sale too. You can see the small huts the locals live in and how the people interact with eachother. People tend to gather along the shore side of the road for eating, socialising and siestas. It is an opportunity to see how the people live in a not-so-touristy area. It is not a particularly clean village, but is very interesting. Chickens and dogs wander around freely as they do over most of Phuket. Try freshly cooked Thai Pork Sausages if you're game - they're made from offal. Most of them are shaped like small balls rather than the usual sausage shape. The local children are thrilled to see someone different around and start to show off - as children do. Watching them swim naked and play so naturally really is a pleasure. No computers and video games here, thank goodness! I really enjoyed taking a stroll through the village in the afternoon. I expect it's a lot different to the mornings when everyone would be busy working. I have created a travelogue with more images and a better feel of the village.

More beaches and caves: Chalong Bay - more relaxed

  • Chalong Bay is one of the touristic not so overcrowded beaches in Phuket. There are accomodations here also - if you choose to have it a little more quiet. Fishers are living and working here. The beach (if I remember right) is also less sand and more stone. But there are a lot of very nice places and sights here - and fish - you will never get any that is fresher!
