More beaches and caves: Koh Pannyi - Home of the "Sea Gypsies"
A very unusual view for Thailand is this mosque, built on stilts as the whole village. It is inhabited by what the Thai call "Sea Gypsies". They are muslims who once seeked shelter from religious persecution. Nowadays they make their living from the many tourists who pass by. Most tours stop here for lunchtime and the villagers sell handicrafts, fish and crabs.

More beaches and caves: Tham Lod Tunnel (3)
Look at the "traffic". Most of the time on the tours other boats were immediately in front and behind us. That was in the late 1980s, so you can imagine, how it looks like today.

More beaches and caves: Tham Lod Tunnel (2)
Rocks in all shapes hang down from the ceiling, giving the passage the appearance of sort of utopic scenery.

More beaches and caves: Tham Lod Tunnel (1)
The Tham Lod rock has a beautiful tunnel and obviously every tourist boat simply has to pass through it.

More beaches and caves: gathering bird eggs ...
This cave is inhabited by hundreds of birds who breed here. The boats can enter and you see a dome of some 15 metres height, the walls covered with bamboo-scaffoldings that allow people to climb up to the nets in order to collect the eggs. Unfortunately I did not have a flash light with me to take a picture inside. There is one thing I still remember after all these years: The dreadful smell inside the cave.

More beaches and caves: Sunset at Phuket
I didn't find any amazing tropical island sunsets here... The view of the seascape was plain and characterless and the sunsets were totally uninspiring... Hat Kata itself is crowded with mostly middle aged western tourists and adds nothing to the effect... I guarantee you have seen better sunsets in your home city, no matter where it is you live...! Here is a photo, you can judge for yourself whether it's good or not...

More beaches and caves: Visiting the islands
A visit to the islands is a must. The scenery is just fantastic and so different from what we are used to. The rock formations are lovely and they just made a wonderfull setting for photo's and movies.

More beaches and caves: Sea Canoe
About 16 of us were taken out on a boat, we sat on top and there was a kitchen below (plus toilet, engine and a big wheel). After about an hour we stopped at an island (the type you see in the bond movies) and we got into a flat canoe made of very thick plastic (2 in each plus our guide) and proceeded to the centre of this island which could only be reached via a cave and only at certain times of the day when the tide was low. It was unbelievable,I have never been anywhere so quiet, It was like going back to the land that time forgot. We were surounded by steep cliffs with trees that were growing out of sheer rock, no human or very few had been could set foot on these islands as there does not seem to be any beeches just sheer cliffs. We went back to the boat and were given what we thought was our main meal only to discover later that this was only a snack. The main meal came later in the day and was like a banquette. There was also an endless supply of free drinks (coke, fanta etc ). We visited a further 3 islands plus stopped for a swim in the sea and were brought back just as it was going dark which added to the atmostphere, you could see all the fishing boats with their small lights on, either moored up along the jetty (this jetty was older than the islands and that was another adventure walking along it) or out at sea. All in all the day was filled with adventure and one I shall never forget.

More beaches and caves: Beaches of Phuket-Surin Beach
Another one of the quieter beaches. But again, the sea was very rough. There are a lot of huts/shacks along the beach serving local food, western food and beverages. The atmosphere was more relaxed here and not much people were bothering the tourists.
