Wat Phra Tong by Myndo A Wat is a Buddhist Temple. There are quite a few on Phuket island. Examples are Wat Phra Tong, Wat Naka, Wat Chalong and many more. In Wat Chalong southwest of Phuket Town they worship the statues of Monks that were doing special under Rama V. In Wat Phra Tong I took this picture of a stone roof. I like the fine ornaments of the stile here. On other places the have wood roofs -mostly red with golden edges. It also pays to look for those Wats that are not named on the maps. There are real treasures out there! Show some respect when visiting them. They are free to visit when they are not celebrating. Take off your shoes before entering a building. Leave a Comment

The beautiful temple of Phuket that attracts many by sailor_p Wat Chalong is Phuket’s most important Buddhist temple and is the biggest and most magnificent of Phuket’s 29 Buddhist monasteries. The architecture is typical of temples found throughout Thailand. Wat Chalong is associated with the revered monks, Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang, both of whom were famous for there work in herbal medicine and tending to the injured. Many locals visit this temple to be blessed by the monks and receive a good luck charm in the form of a string tied around the wrist, which they believe protects them from injury and illness. Also, many people believe that they can be blessed to strike lottery too! Well, these are just local beliefs and it's up to you whether you want to believe it or not! It's your take! And by the way, there are some stalls selling colourful beachwear and sarongs near the temple. The prices are very reasonable and the designs are wide ranging! Leave a Comment

by Tina-Perth Wat Chalong, or Chai Tararam is the most famous and most beautiful of the 29 temples in Phuket. If you like to visit temples, then this one is a must. It is said that if you haven't seen Wat Chalong, you haven't seen Phuket. In the Sermon Hall there are statues of Luang Po Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang, two highly revered monks who, in 1876 led the people of Phuket to fight against the influx of immigrant Chinese who came to take the city and the island's tin mining until the government sent troops to defeat them. The King then bestowed Luang Po Chaem the ecclesiastical title of Phra Kru Wisit Wongsacharn. This temple also houses a tooth of a Buddha which came from Sri Lanka. You will find it inside a large glass balloon which sits on a base of marble, shaped like a Lotus flower. For some further information on Wat Chalong, see my Local Customs tips to read about my experience of giving thanks to Spirit for some traditional medicine. When visiting the temple, please be sure to observe the rules of dress and behaviour. Dress: No bare shoulders, stomachs or legs. Remove your shoes before entering any of the buildings. Behaviour: Do not pose with Buddha. Do not shout or swear. Do not point at anything with your feet, particularly towards any statues of Buddha. Be respectful at all times, this is a sacred place. by Adeline_Foo The island's most important Buddhist temple is located on Highway 4021 between Ao Chalong and Phuket town. It is a large and ornate temple, but has become famous throughout Thailand for its spiritual power rather than architectural merit. It is associated with three revered monks, all great healers, so people come to regain their physical and spiritual powers and buy amulets to protect them from misfortune. Leave a Comment

Wat Chalong temple is one of few famous temples of Phuket, located about 8 kms from town. We visited there to pay respect to the status of three revered monks ; Luang Pro Chaem, Luang Por Chuang and Luang Por Gluam. The temple is very beautiful, there are many visitors there, mostly Thais. It’s free to enter but you can do small donation to contribute to maintenance or restoration. Leave a Comment Directions: From town, take Vichit Songkram Road to the Bypass Road and turn left, about 10 mins you will see the temple on the left.

Wat Chalong, market, Phuket by Myndo Wat Chalong is maybe the most well known temple on Phuket. It is a big complex, many colorful buildings. We had the luck to come there when they had market. A big market, more for the Thais than the tourists. If you ever have the chance to visit a market in Thailand (especially one that is NOT made up just for the tourists), do so. Shop through the many shops, haggle. Eat through all the tiny stands that offer food. Don?t be afraid to try this. In all the weeks I was in Thailand I have never had stomach trouble. Not even with the oysters here, or the rice in the bamboo or the grilled chicken or.... you get what I want to say. Also stay long enough to view some of the Thai Culture: The traditional dances and the shadow plays. Leave a Comment

by Mahieu This temple is situated on the road from Phuket Town to Rawai Beach. It was one of the most beautiful and authentic temples I saw. It is Phukets most important Buddhist temple. Many Thais come here to be blessed by the monks. The temple enshrines statues of Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang, Phuket's most revered monks. Leave a Comment

This temple is a nice surprise situated about ten minutes' walk from Karon Beach. The proper name for this temple is Wat Suwan Khiri Khet, but most people refer to it simply as Wat Karon. This is not a temple which is often frequented by tourists and you can enjoy the quiet here. It makes a peaceful contrast from the action, shopping and touts just down the road. Worth a visit if you are in Karon. Leave a Comment Address: Patak Rd, KaronDirections: Walk straight down Patak Rd. from the big rotunda. You'll reach the wat in five minutes.

Reclining Buddha @ Wat Tham Suwankhuha by jrs1234 If you're on a day trip to Phang-Nga bay, then this unusual temple may well be on your itinerary - it was the first stop on ours. It's built inside a cave in a hill, so there's not much in the way of the usual temple architecture, but once you get inside there's a nice reclining Buddha, which is worth a look. The other distinguishing feature is the local population of monkeys, which you are encouraged to feed by buying a few bananas from a local vendor. Don't pet them, though - you might get a bite! Leave a Comment Directions: About 10km south from Phang-Nga town, off route 4.
