Buses & Flights: Buses to the beaches from Phuket town

Buses (sawng thaews) to the various beaches leave from the main market in Phuket.
If you arrive at the main bus station from elsewhere in Thailand and want to get to the beach don't believe anyone that tells you that it is necessary to get a tuk-tuk or taxi. You can of course, but the bus is cheaper.
The market is about a 10 minute walk from the main bus station or a short tuk-tuk ride if you are carrying luggage.

    Tuc Tuc: Tuk Tuk Tuk
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tuk tuks are named because of the sound of their engine, these are motorcycle 2-stroke engines. They are popular amongst tourists for their novelty value.

In Phuket, they tend to be small vans instead of 3-wheeled rickshaws.

You should bargain with the driver before getting in. If not you may end up paying too much.

The downside is they only tend to go to the really touristy places like Soi Bangla.

Buses & Flights: Unsatisfactory Thai Airways Experience Pt 2
  • Tip Rating:
  • We left at 11.45am, to arrive at the airport at the required time before our 1.55pm flight, so with the packing and travelling we did not eat lunch. The food in the Phuket Business Lounge consists only of awful sandwiches and pastries, so we did not eat anything there, thinking we would be offered food on the plane. All we were offered was the dry mango pastry shown. The flight was short, but we could have been offered something decent to eat. Neither Steve or I ate it.

We sat in the lounge at BKK and tried to find something to eat as we were very hungry, but the food again was pastry or awful sandwiches. I can't eat much pastry as it upsets my stomach, apart from being unhealthy. We made do with carrot & celery. Another couple came to sit with us as there were no seats left. They were from Switzerland and were also very unhappy about TA.

The BKK-Perth flight was far better. We decided to watch the featured movie, but it wasn't on. We then decided to watch Miss Congeniality 2, but reception was so bad we couldn't view it. The Flight Mgr had been told about our problems by one of the staff. He asked why we weren't watching anything and we showed him the problem. He fixed and restarted the movie so we could watch it.

We got into the Perth terminal at around 7am, very tired and eager to get home after flying all night. We waited for 40mins for our "Priority" luggage. Only one case arrived and was not tagged with priority tags. We then had to go through the process of reporting lost luggage. We were at the airport for 1hr. We were extremely unhappy as toiletries, phone chargers etc were in that case. We eventually got it back the following day.

After being totally ignored on my first letter of complaint, I again took it up with TA in Perth, as they'd also refused to hand over my points to the Star Alliance, as we'd thought, so we lost 11,000 miles each. I did get a very patronising response, but of course, no kind of reparations.
We will never fly Thai Airways again.

Buses & Flights: From Phuket Airport to Patong Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • The cheapest way to travel from Phuket Airport to Patong Beach is by local van/bus. When you exit the Phuket airport at the main entrance, take a left turn and look for this sign. As you approach this sign, you will be approached by locals offering you a ride to Patong beach or other destinations in phuket for a flat rate of 150BHT. Taxis will charge you a rate of 1200 to 1500 BHT to the same destination. I think you can work out the math from here.

Very convenience and easy access to anywhere. Cheap and fast and most best part is you could get this littile speedo transport everywhere around Phuket. You could make a deal with the driver for a day tour package. Discuss about the price first before you make any good deal. I had mine and it cost 600baht for a whole day trip around the island. Its was fun and totaly great experince.

Renting cars and taxis: Great local driver with fair prices
  • Tip Rating:
  • We found taxis expensive, plus there's always the issue of drivers who don't speak much English or want to take you to places so they get commission. Another forum recommended a youngish local man, Mr Mor. He's a trained vet and speaks excellent English. Clean, new, fully insured Toyota Wish seats 6 passengers. He can be hired by the hour for short trips to night markets etc, or for the half day or full day. Half day from 600 b; full day from 1200 b (petrol is becoming really expensive so difficult to be exact). When we were there he took us all over the island to temples, shopping (he knew where to go for the best prices), beaches, attractions and excellent local restaurants that really gave us the insider track! Because his English is so good, you can ask him about things you see or ask for other suggestions. We gave him a list of places we wanted to go and he worked out the most sensible route. Highly recommended by many people: polite, professional, very reliable. Contact him at pongkands@gmail.com or by phone on 01-647 2643.

    Buses & Flights: Airasia
  • Tip Rating:
  • Asia's first budget airline was bornt when Airasia took the skies for the very first time in Malaysia. Its first route is from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru. But slowly it has expanded its territory coverage to the whole of Malaysia.

With its new alliance with the Thai government, Airasia took the Thais by surprise when it signed a joint agreement with Thai Prime Minister's company, Shin Corporation to form Thailand's first low fare carrier. Airasia's Thai domestic airfares starts as low as 9 baht to as high as 600 baht for a way's ticket.

One way's ticket from either Bangkok to Phuket or from Phuket to Bangkok is priced at an incredible 500 bahts. However, the disadvantage is you need to book a couple of months before your departure. Be assured that Airasia frequently launches promotion.

For more info, please refers to Airasia website at www.airasia.com

Longtail boars are not as flashy or fast as modern speedboats. However a trip in a longtail boat is an interesting experience and a great way to take short sightseeing trips.

It's not for the feint-hearted though as there is usually no safety equipment like life vests.

    Tuc Tuc: Zoom around!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tuc Tucs are the best way to get around the island. They are very cheap and you shouldn't be afraid to bargain. If you hit on a driver you like them ask them to come again the next day. Tuc Tuc drivers make excellent tour guides. We were there during school holidays and our driver had his little 5 year old. He was so sweet. We paid both for of them to come in with us at Aquarium. The driver acted as a translated when need, told us stories of what it was like growing up in Phuket and it was lovely to see his son get so excited about feeding the fishes. At Lunch time he said he would take us somewhere special. We thought we were going somewhere very exotic. Instead he took us to a large mall. It actually was a great experience. We didn't see any other tourist just Thia people doing there shopping, lots of teenagers hanging out and lots of everyday activities. After a week of beach hawkers, roadside stalls and Indian tailors, it was quite a contrast.
