You could take a bus from Patong Beach to Phuket Town for THB20. Frequency is about 30 mins but we do see at least two buses at the depot everytime. The departure point is just opposite Café Del Mar at the southern end of Patong Beach.

The bus will travel through town via Bangla Road and stopping along the way to pick up passengers before finally heading off across the hills to Phuket Town.

If your plan is to go to Phuket Town direct from the airport, then for THB85, it’s a real budget choice of transportation. You can do your shopping at Central Festival, Big C, Tesco Lotus before heading to Patong Beach. A bus from Patong Beach to Phuket Town will cost only THB20.

At Phuket Airport there are two places that you can hop-on and off the bus. At level 1, at the left hand corner of the arrival hall of the Airport (beside the join mini bus area).
You may also board the Airport Bus just infront of Burger King at level 2.

The Airport Bus made stops from two station at the Phuket Airport and to Phantep Condotown, Surakun Stadium, Central /Big C / Lotus, Erawadee Bypass, Boat Lagoon, Heroines Monument, Pranangsang Temple, Baan Saku, Pearl Village Hotel.

One of the cheapest mode of transportation from Airport to Patong Beach is to take the join minibus. Tickets are priced at THB150 and can be purchased at the counter upon exit of the arrival hall. You may also pay direct to the driver who will make purchase of the tickets on your behalf. The mini bus will depart when they have 10 passengers. Turn to your left and you will see a mini bus signage.

Although the price of THB150 is cheap compared to the price of a taxi, I would caution those in a hurry to pay the extra THB to have your own taxi to bring you direct to your destination. I would consider taking the join minibus as a tourist trap as they don’t even ask us where we were all going when we board.

Finally, we were all driven to a travel agent company where they gave an excuse that there were so many of us and need to check our tickets and make some rearrangements. So we were all asked to seat at the desk. The staff asked where we are going and have we booked our accommodations and tours. He tried to sell us accommodation and tour packages and we gave them the we are not interested look. We wasted half an hour of our time here where we have to wait for the rest to be brainwashed. Surprisingly, the rest were local Thais and they all signed up their packages either for tour or accommodations. Probably they were given locals prices.

Phuket may be a paradise for tourists - be it food, shopping or spa. Always remember to leave your last 500 baht as you need it for the payment of departure tax at the Phuket International Airport! You can either pay your departure tax at the manned booths or through the automated machines. Do note that you need cash for the payment - no cheque or credit cards!

Air Asia has the best rates I have found in and around SE Asia and Thailand.

I usually fly last minute and 1-way (cause who knows where i'll want to go next) And have always gotten a great price with Air Asia.

Recently, I even booked the same day and got 1-way fare Phuket to BKK for $23 USD. the other low cost airlines are competitively priced as well, but, for me, Air Asia has larger routes (more cities serviced). I usually book online and they do offer better prices with advanced purchase. However, if and when you book the same day as travel or within 24 hours, you cannot do it online and must reserve a ticket on the phone and then pay for it at the ticket counter at the airport before check-in (2 separate counters at BKK and SIN)

The planes are well kept and free seating (like SouthWest in the states). Other great low-cost airlines: Nok Air, Bangkok Air, Tiger Air and JetStar Air ( Phuket or Bkk to Singapore), One Two Go by Orient Thai Air. .... all are great low cost carriers in and around Thailand.

    www.nokair.com
    www.bangkokair.com

1 thing to watch out for - all the Asia carriers (Thai Air included) have a 15 kg luggage limitation and charge 30-60 BHT per kg over. So your luggage could be more expensive then your person. If you are returning to an area and do not need all your baggage check with your hotel or storage at the airport for leaving it behind. Luggage Storage at BKK is 90 BHT per day (can add up fast) and is located in the International Terminal.

You can either go by bus from Bangkok to Phuket, but that takes about 14 hours or either go by plane. We chose for the second option. The flight took us about 1h30.
We chose for Thai Airways and booked via the Internet. Domestic flights in Thailand are really cheap!

We took Tigerairways which departs from the Budget Terminal in the early mornings. Ticket was priced at S$150 each for a return trip with taxes included.

We don’t mind taking the budget airlines especially when the flight is less than 2 hours.

We were glad that we no longer need to pay the THB500 airport departure tax as it is now inclusive in the air fares.

If you need visa on arrival, join the queue and pay THB1,000 for the visa.

This dinky little airport, at the northern end of the island, serves both domestic and international flights. The runway is relatively short, so the traffic is mostly short-haul, although Thai manage to fly in 777s from Bangkok. The terminal is pretty small, but looks like it's been recently refurbished.

There's a transportation desk which has fixed price taxi services to various destinations on the island - I think I paid somewhere around 500 baht for the 30km to Patong. You should also be able to get a hire car here.

There are a few shops and restaurants at the airport, both before and after check-in - so if you have a little time to wait before catching your flight on your way out, you'll have something to do. However, just as at Bangkok airport, the shops seem to be pretty expensive, so it's better to buy your souvenirs before you get there if you can.

  • Late Business class lunch - Phuket
    Late Business class lunch
    by Tina-Perth
We were very surprised by the extreme difference in standards between Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways. We were flying Business Class and our experience began regularly enough, we got onto the plane and were seated, but unlike Singapore Airlines, no pre-flight drinks were offered. The staff seemed unreceptive with few smiles. When the stewardess offered us reading material, she offered it to my partner and not to me. She did this with water and he had to ask her on her way back for a drink for me (a couple of times). When our meals had been served (mine came with a tea cup with a chip about 3cm round on the lip), the trays were not removed for at least 30 minutes after we had finished our meals. I needed to move in my seat as my hip was hurting, but was unable to. My partner was sitting in the aisle seat and reached across to the centre seats (unoccupied) to place our trays there. Meanwhile I could see a stewardess sitting down reading behind the curtain on the other side of the plane. Another surprise was the poor standard of food offered, especially when it was served in tin foil containers.

No drinks were offered on the trip other than the tea/coffee after your meal. We felt like having a champagne, so we requested one each. When we had finished our glasses, we waited for about 10 minutes, but still no one came to ask us if we (or anyone else) would like another. We pressed the assistance button and waited for 5-6 minutes. I could see the steward in front of the curtain with his legs crossed and reading the paper. I undid my seatbelt, picked up the glasses and took them to him, asking for a refill. He did not apologise or seem to care that I'd had to get up.

At around AUD$6,000 for 2 for a flight from Perth to Phuket, you'd think the standards would be quite high, so it's disappointing to know we could have saved several thousand dollars and flown Economy on Singapore Airlines for at least the same standard of food and better service, just closer chairs.

    Part 2 next tip.

  • We left at 11.45am, to arrive at the airport at the required time before our 1.55pm flight, so with the packing and travelling we did not eat lunch. The food in the Phuket Business Lounge consists only of awful sandwiches and pastries, so we did not eat anything there, thinking we would be offered food on the plane. All we were offered was the dry mango pastry shown. The flight was short, but we could have been offered something decent to eat. Neither Steve or I ate it.

We sat in the lounge at BKK and tried to find something to eat as we were very hungry, but the food again was pastry or awful sandwiches. I can't eat much pastry as it upsets my stomach, apart from being unhealthy. We made do with carrot & celery. Another couple came to sit with us as there were no seats left. They were from Switzerland and were also very unhappy about TA.

The BKK-Perth flight was far better. We decided to watch the featured movie, but it wasn't on. We then decided to watch Miss Congeniality 2, but reception was so bad we couldn't view it. The Flight Mgr had been told about our problems by one of the staff. He asked why we weren't watching anything and we showed him the problem. He fixed and restarted the movie so we could watch it.

We got into the Perth terminal at around 7am, very tired and eager to get home after flying all night. We waited for 40mins for our "Priority" luggage. Only one case arrived and was not tagged with priority tags. We then had to go through the process of reporting lost luggage. We were at the airport for 1hr. We were extremely unhappy as toiletries, phone chargers etc were in that case. We eventually got it back the following day.

After being totally ignored on my first letter of complaint, I again took it up with TA in Perth, as they'd also refused to hand over my points to the Star Alliance, as we'd thought, so we lost 11,000 miles each. I did get a very patronising response, but of course, no kind of reparations.
We will never fly Thai Airways again.
