Buses & Flights: Local public transport
If you want to get around cheap, i suggest you take the local transport. Just note that there is 2 bus stations in Phuket town. One runs within Phuket island and the other runs interstate. Make sure you check out where you should be. 1) Patong beach to Phuket town - 20 BHT. Busses runs every hour along patong beach. 2) Phuket town to Phuket Airport - 55 BHT. Busses runs every hour

Buses & Flights: Expensive Tuk-tuks, or indirect buses?

One small problem with Phuket, is the public transport network. Buses run between Phuket town and all major western beaches, but not between the beaches on the west coast. This means if you don't fancy a long round-about trip to get say from Kata to Patong, you can take a tuk-tuk. The tuk-tuks on Phuket aren't quite like the ones in Bangkok. They're bigger and very expensive. Fares are fixed by the "tuk-tuk cartel", so don't bother trying to haggle. 200Baht is the fare from Kata to Patong and that's just oneway!! I read that taxis are being introduced to the island in order to provide competition for the tuk-tuk oligopoly and therefore reduce costs of transport between beach towns. Send me an e-mail if you learn more!

    Buses & Flights: Air Asia
Air Asia flies to Phuket daily (sometimes twice daily) from Kuala Lumpur and from Bangkok. The fares are amazingly low, but are however seasonal and subjected to surcharges. If you have to catch a connecting flight. Do not rely on this airline as delays are not uncommon. But hey its cheap! adjust your expectations accordingly. Transfers between Patong Beach and the airport are approx THB500 and the journey is about 40mins. Arranging one from the front desk of your hotel may costs more.

Buses & Flights: Air Asia - Cheap wy to travel in Style
Air Asia is a no frills airline and is Asia's Answer to European no frills airlines like Ryan Air. However to avail of cheap tickets you must book well in advance. I booked my tickets from Bangkok to Phuket for 800 bhat and return ticket for 299 bhat which is cheaper than travelling by bus. If you include the expenses you incur on your trip by bus which include dinner, drinks it fall more expensive to travel by bus. You also save time as it takes just over an hour to reach Phuket from Bangkok by plane. Never experienced any delays but have heard of some complaints. However the price is great. Good looking air hostesses and plush leather seats.
