Motorbikes: Rent A Bike
The best way is to rent a bike if you have less than 2 person, a bike will cost about 200-400bt for 24hrs (this price depends on season). As I normally put up in Kata, there are a few good bike rental there. All you need to do is to pay up and leave your passport there for safe keeping.

    Motorbikes: Motobikes
The easiest way to get around in Phuket is to get a motobike! As I was visiting a friend in Phuket, I bunk in in his house and he bring me around town in this newly bought motorbike. My first time on a bike and one without a helmet too! In Singapore, it is illegal to ride a bike without helmet .... Thanks a million Francis for a good time I had in Phuket despite the rain! =)

    Motorbikes: Good motorbike rent company
There is a company called "Phuket Motorbike Rental" in Patong Beach. They have brand new Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, JRD & Kawasaki motorbikes. The bikes are always very clean. There are never any mechanical problems and never any problems such as bent rims which is always the case with most motorbike rentals.
I highly recommend renting you motorbikes from these guys. They are great to deal with and they even deliver the motorbikes to your hotel!
You can check out their website at www.phuktmotorbikerental.com

This could be another alternative of moving around Patong or even Phuket Island.

    Motorbikes: Warnings/tips about motorcycles
We rented a large 750cc motorcycle for a day in Phuket. The guy wanted my passport as deposit for the bike. No way I was going to do that. It was late in the morning and the guy hadn't rented it yet, so he agreed to keeping my driver's license instead. As they do not sell insurance or rent helmets (at least in 1995), we figured that we were on our own with zero protection if we crashed this thing.

Nothing happened and we had a great time, but my plan if we damaged it severely was to leave it in a ditch and fly away. Let him keep the driver's license.

Tip: it may be worth bringing along an old passport or some other "official" looking document and telling these guys your passport is with the tour group or some other BS story. Let you have the upper hand at the end of the transaction, should anything occur.

Motorbikes: Around the island on a motorbike
We rented this for 200 BHT per bike and pumped another 100 BHT petrol to go around the whole island. Our whole journey around the island for only 300 BHT in total. Nice..just becareful when you biking in phuket town as its a little busy and also try not to bike when it gets dark.

    Motorbikes: Motorcycles/Scooters in Phuket
You can catch a bus (find out where the unmarked bus stop is, and the bus is the blue open~backed van, and you have to wave it down!), tuk tuks/taxis are usually waiting, or there are always men on motorcycles ready to drive you wherever. Make sure you both agree on the price first! Make sure the agreed price includes everyone (we have been fooled once!). Only the driver gets a helmet. They will even carry two of you on the back of the motorcycle! (Risky, but fun!) After the first 2 days in Phuket, we hired a motorcycle. It is very cheap and easy to get around if you know how to ride a motorcycle, and if you have a drivers license. If you don't, you may be stopped by a policeman, and you will be fined. Make sure you try and get a helmet for your passenger too (if there are2 of you). Also, hot as it may be, wear a light jacket/long sleeved shirt and jeans, it may save the skin from being grazed off in an accident. You will see many people wearing next to nothing on the motorbikes, but you don't want to see them in an accident. The traffic there is crazy, they have no concept of lanes! Watch out for people who do not signal before they pull over and stop!Anyway, we enjoyed exploring Phuket on the motorcycle, and we had no accidents. We got to go to some quiet beaches and go whenever we liked without worrying about which bus to catch and without having to haggle with any taxi or tuk tuk drivers. It was also very cheap, only about 100 baht for a whole tank of petrol! The roads in Phuket are easy to follow with a map. Another warning: make sure you hire your vehicle from a reputable place or from your hotel. Otherwise it may not be working properly, or someone who hired it to you will steal it back and you will have to pay for the 'stolen' vehicle.

    Motorbikes: Around by scooter
For a good driver I can recommend renting a scooter, its the best way to get around. And very cheap. But you need to be avare, traffic is lefthanded and in same places chaotic. But you can always stay away from busy roads and town centers and just drive slowly on junglehillroads and watch the beautifull scenery going by.
We rented our scooter from an older, religious couple to avoid any "pettifogging". Lucky us cause one day on a gas station boy who refueled our scooter knocked it down. Luckily only the brake handhold got broken but some other rental could have ripped us of because of it.
Always carry drivers licence with you. Police will stop you almost every day and sometimes several times and if you dont have it, you need to go to policestation to pay the bill before they give you your scooter back. The bill is not big but the trouble is.
And its also possible to get parking ticket as well, like we did. In that case the police will chain your scooter and will unchain it only after you pay the ticket in policestation.
But policemen seem to be very nice in Thailand anyways =)
