Wat Phra Keo

by traveldave

Wat Phra Keo, or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, is surrounded by golden chedis. The Emerald Buddha is not emerald, but is instead probably jasper quartz or nephrite jade. The 30-inch-tall (75-centimeter-tall) statue is the most sacred and precious of all the images in Thailand. Legend has it that the Emerald Buddha was discovered in the 1400s in northern Thailand when a bolt of lightning struck an old chedi. It was briefly housed in the northern cities of Chiang Rai, Lampang, and Chiang Mai before being taken to Luang Prabang and then Vientiane by the Laotians. King Rama I recovered the statue and installed it in Bangkok.Nowadays, the Emerald Buddha is placed high up on a gilded altar beneath an umbrella of gold. The statue is dressed in robes made of gold and precious gems. The robes are changed by the king himself at the start of each of Thailand's seasons: the hot season, the cool...

Wat Arun

by traveldave

Wat Arun, or the Temple of Dawn, was named after Aruna, the Hindu god of the dawn. The temple was originally built to house the Emerald Buddha, which is now in Wat Phra Keo in the Grand Palace Complex. The central prang is 220 feet (67 meters) high, and the base of the temple is 768 feet (234 meters) in circumference.

The Golden Buddha

by traveldave

The Golden Buddha is housed in Wat Traimitr, just off Yaowaraj Road. The golden statue is probably from the late Sukhothai or early Ayutthaya period in Thai history. At five tons (4,536 kilograms), it is the world's largest and heaviest solid gold object. The Golden Buddha was found by accident in the 1950s, when it was being moved for a construction project. Covered in stucco at the time, no one knew that there was a golden treasure inside. Because of its great weight, the sling being used to move the statue snapped, and it fell to the ground. The stucco cracked, revealing the golden statue inside. Originally, the golden figure was probably coated in stucco to hide it from the invading Burmese armies in the 1700s.

Phra Si Sanphet Chedi

by traveldave

There are four large intricately decorated chedis on the grounds of Wat Pho honoring the first three kings of the Chakri Dynasty (two are for King Rama III). The largest is the gray-colored Phra Si Sanphet Chedi on the left. It was constructed to encase the remains of a sacred image of Buddha.

Wat Pho

by traveldave

Wat Pho, or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is the oldest and largest temple in Bangkok. It is famous for the Reclining Buddha, 150 feet (45 meters) long and 50 feet (15 meters) high, and covered entirely with gold leaf, which is housed inside the wat. The grounds of the temple contain living quarters for 300 monks, and numerous buildings used for various religious purposes.

The Wat Pho Complex

by traveldave

At 20 acres (eight hectares), the Wat Pho Complex is the largest wat in Bangkok. It is also the oldest, having been established 200 years before Bangkok became the capital of Thailand. It was almost completely rebuilt by King Rama I after the capital was moved to Bangkok. Known mostly for the Reclining Buddha, the Wat Pho Complex also has more Buddha images than any wat in the country, with more than 1,000. Most of these were moved here from Thailand's ruined former capitals of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai. The grounds also contain four large chedis honoring the first three kings of the Chakri Dynasty (two are for King Rama III), as well as 91 other smaller chedis. There are also chapels, rock gardens, and numerous statues. To the right is the base of a chedi on which the intricate tilework mosaics are visible.

The Grand Palace

by traveldave

The Grand Palace was started in 1782 by King Chakri. Since then, most Thai kings have added to the palace. It was a royal residence until 1946, when the king moved to the Chitralada Palace a few miles away, in the Dusit area of Bangkok.Nowadays, the Grand Palace is closed to the public and is only used by the king for ceremonial occasions, such as Coronation Day.

The Grand Palace Complex

by traveldave

The royal center of Bangkok, or the Grand Palace Complex, includes the largest collection of temples and palaces in Thailand. The temple complex contains stunning examples of traditional Thai architecture, and includes the Grand Palace itself; the Royal Chapel; the Royal Collection of Weapons; the Coin Pavilion; and Wat Phra Keo, or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Thailand's most sacred object, a statue of Buddha actually carved from green jade. The temples in the Grand Palace Complex are covered in gold leaf, tiles, and mosaics of porcelain, which glimmer in the tropical sun. Architectural structures include chedis (tall spires) and prangs (obelisk-like towers). The large gold chedi visible in the background is the Phra Si Rattana Chedi, constructed to house a piece of Buddha's breastbone.

Khao Takiab (Chopstick Hill), Hua Hin

by tigertribal

Southern end of Hua Hin beach, 5-6 km from town. We just hired a tuk-tuk & the driver waited. There is a temple, called Wat Khao Takiab or Wat Khao Lad, situated at the top of the hill, where there is a good view of Hua Hin from here. Around the base of the steps leading to the temple above, there is a large number of monkeys. You are able to purchase banana's to feed them. Just be careful as the monkeys can be aggressive. One tried to snatch a bottle of water from Doreens hand & they also fight amongst themselves for food. Saying that, there is a water pool up past some religious figures & it was entertaining just to watch them haying fun in the pool. There are also a lovely beach with the giant golden Buddha Statue standing against the cliff, restaurants & shops

James Bond Island, Phuket

by tigertribal

We took the slow ferry to James Bond Island. We just booked it from the Beach Road vendors, all similar prices. They asked for 2,000Baht each, but do haggle & in the end we paid 1,000Baht (£20) each, which we were happy to pay. July 2010. Pick-up/return from hotel was included as was unlimited soft drinks, fruit & buffet lunch. 40 min drive to ferry from Patong beach, Visited James Bond Island first. Transfered from the ferry onto a long tail boat & taken to the island. It was very busy & I thought the vendors were a bit aggressive as they grabbed Doreen & dragged her over to their staffs. Every one was taking photos in their James Bond poses. Stayed there just under one hour which I thought was a bit long, saying that you could go swimming or walk around the headland. After returning to the ferry, we headed of to the next set of Islands, sorry, cannot remember their names. On the way we...
