Lampang – the National Elephant Institute

by vtveen

Visiting Thailand without visiting an elephant centre wasn’t an option. On our driving tour through the country we went north to Chiang Mai along Highway 11 and turned off for the National Elephant Institute (or former Thai Elephant Conservation Center). We had read that this Institute should be one of the nicest, most authentic and less touristy in Thailand. After paying our entrance fee we could catch the shuttle bus to the heart of the centre. We were just in time for the first show of the day and took place on the covered stand and watched the tricks of the 13 elephants and their ‘mahouts’; which means they are pulling and pushing logs on several ways. After the show we could feed the elephants with a bunch of bamboo stalks. So far so good, but we didn’t like the acts when elephants are supposed to make paintings (www.elephantartgallery.com/paintings) or play music. We walked around...

Get Married?

by xymmot

When going to your girlfriends parents house in Thailand, stay outside the village or else you may be Shanghai like me. We got marry in a fever. For me to stay in the house overnight, we should be married or it is frowned upon when strangers stay overnight. It was in my plan anyway but the next morning it happen. I knew something was strange when I woke up and heard her dad whitsling. My clothes were gone to be clean and blessed, When I peeked out my room I saw a group of people gathering outside the door. I ask where is my clothes and what is going on??? My girlfriend then just said put on your best clothes (a, t-shirt) and follow her lead. Next thing I knew I was married, blessed and had a party. The honeymoon was on Phi Phi island, Strange but true

Phi Phi Island Speedboat Tour

by myshell...

If your going to be in Phuket, you can't leave without going on a Phi Phi Island Speedboat Day tour.We took this tour through Destination Asia (they are a very reparable tour guide company, and while in Thailand we did all of our tours through them). We visited Maya Bay, this is where "The Beach" with Leonardo DeCaprico was filmed, and then went around to the various Phi Phi Islands, we also were provided with snorkling gear and stopped in the middle of the ocean for a snorkel, the fish are amazing! The tour included lunch on another island and before we docked we stopped at a inhabitable island where we laid on the beach drinking cocktails out of pineapples and coconuts.I would recommend this tour to anyone who is travelling to Phuket.

River Kwai and Tiger Temple Tour

by myshell...

Any trip to Thailand wouldn't be complete with out partaking in a River Kwai and Tiger Temple Tour. This Tour introduces you to the Death Railway, which was built during the war and takes you to the Museum so you can get a real idea of the tragic events during the war, after discovering the history of Thailand, then they take you to the Tiger Temple, where you can get up close and personal with both tigers and tiger cubs.It was the best experience and I have photographs that will last a life time of me playing with the baby cubs.Just remember not to try and pick them up!!!

See the King Cobra

by GitaP

I am fasinated by snakes, especially the poisonous ones like the cobras, mambas and vipers. But the King Cobra has always been a favourite and high on my agenda when I went to chiangmai was to see a snake show. I normally will not support any activity that exploits animals in a way that is harmful and degrading but the cobras shows in Thailand are far more than mere spectacle. The snakes are revered and protected by the Thai people especially in those villages that keep snakes. The show I went to was about 20 km outside of Chiangmai and we got to walk around the various cages and pit gardens where the snakes were kept. Coming face to face with a giant King Cobra with just a chicken wire fence between us was an experience I will find hard to top. It stood up, intelligent eyes looking directly at me, so confident in its power that I felt like making obeyances before him! No trip to...

North for temples and cloth

by bulldogtwo

For what are want to do I would suggest the north, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai area. Lots of temples and lots of places to buy good Thai silk cloth and clothing. I would suggest staying out of the Night Bazaar area for shopping unless it is small trinket items as the oprices there are often 2-4x's the amount right around the corner not considered the bazaar area. Also the rainy season, beaches in the south can still be fun but it will be rainy and you can not come close to finding deals on silk products like you can in the north.Good luck and have fun

PHUKET - Town of Phuket -

by keeweechic

The compact provincial town serves mainly as a dormitory and shopping centre. Today the main attractions in Phuket Town are the old Sino-Portuguese buildings, the elaborate Thai temples, and the public markets. Chinese shrines and shop houses abound in downtown Phuket (Chinatown) as a result of large scale Chinese immigrations in search of tin wealth. Walking is the best way to experience Chinatown. The best way to appreciate the full layout of Phuket is to hike up Rang Hill, just to the town’s north. On the north side of the hill about half down is a giant nine metre tall seated figure of the Buddha in the ‘Suppression Evil' pose.

BANGKOK - Floating Markets

by keeweechic

These are very important commercial centres for those living on the banks of the many canals and away from road. Every day, from about 6.00-11.00 am small boats laden with all kinds of tropical fruits and vegetables and other produce from the orchards or nearby communities assemble for business. There are 4 floating markets which visitors can see:Taling Chan Floating Market is a weekend market in front of Taling Chan District Office, starting from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm. Boat trip service is available for sight-seeing along the canal where gardens and the village lifestyle are still to be seen.Directions : The market is also accessible by buses No. 79 and 83 which pass nearby.

Kuang Restaurant

by yen_2

I've been eating in this restaurant for almost a year as we're in Bangkok for almost a year now! They serve delicious Fried Cradb with Curry. And if you happen to come along in Bangkok, do go visit in this place. Not expensive, serves a great stuff of seafoods that are to die for! I mean, if you love thai foods, this is the best place! If you have any questions about this place, email me!
