Phuket Fantasea

by lindyz

Interesting place, one which you will either love or hate. Theme Park type of place, with lots to see and do. The actual show is amazing and well worth it. Most Hotels will organise transfer and show, or transfer, buffet dinner and show. We paid $57AUD each with no dinner. It may sound expensive but I do believe it is worth it. There is so much to see outside, before you even get into the show, that I would allow several hours for this. For this reason, you may be better to perhaps get a taxi there, because when you get a transfer you only have about one hour before you go into the show. You are not allowed to take your camera into the actual show, but there are plenty snaps to be had outside. You will have to leave your camera outside, I was a bit wary about this, but got it back no probs.Statistics of Phuket Fantasea:140 acre Theme Park4,000 seat buffet restaurantCreated at a cost of...

Rose Garden - - Worth the trip but it does not change - - did this about 20 years ago and it is the same trip - - same attractions same souveniers - - did it this time for my Dave as he had not been before - - he enjoyed it.Floating Markets - - Once again had done this before but it was still worth it a second time - - do it - - it is a wonderful day and well worth the money.Elephant camp - - go ride an elephant but do not stay the three nights - - two is all you need and I assume that they will try to pressure you into doing something else on teh third day (they did this to clients staying only overnight - - come on the elephant ride - - r stay in the hotel lobby as you need to be out of the room at 1000 and the bus picks you up at 1500. Other thatn that the hotel and the trip was fantastic.Grand Palace tour - - worth seening once and you must do it -- try not to go on a hot day as it...

some ideas for less touristed Thailand

by seagypsy

If you're going to the major beaches/islands, then many places will have raised their prices for the high and peak season. If possible, it's less crowded and less expensive if you can travel after the holidays because international airfares will also be less after December. But if this is the only time you can visit, then maybe head to Isan in northeast Thailand. There are some interesting Khmer temples in this area or even to the Emerald Triangle.Other options are visiting Sukothai since it's a large yet beautiful historical park with some great buddhas and temples. Or head north to Chiang Rai and visiting the less visited areas such as Nan near the Lao border.Or, if you're seeking a beach holiday, then work your way down the Andaman Coast from Rayong to the Surin Island, then further south to the islands off Trang Province or even down to the Tarutaos (though Ko Lipe will probably be...

Chiang Mai – Bor Sang, umbrella village

by vtveen

We had our rental car and made a trip to the east along Charoen Muang Road. Once we were out of Chiang Mai the road was lined with workshops, small factories and shops, making and selling all kind of crafts and souvenirs. Thai silk, cotton, lacquerware, ceramics, leather products, silverware, wood carvings, jewellery, and antiques can all be found along this road.We stopped, just before the village of Bor Sang on the left hand side of the road, at a kind of craft market. We could walk on our own pace along the craftsmen producing the famous Sa-paper umbrellas. These umbrellas, parasols and fans are crafted from cane or bamboo, covered with rice paper and hand painted with bright and colourful flowers or dragons. There is a shop where one can buy a rather traditional Thai gift for a ‘couple’ of baths. The market had also a small café for our morning coffee. At the intersection of San...

Snorkel off Phi Phi Island

by lindyz

On our day trip to Phi Phi Island we had the opportunity to go snorkelling off the back of the boat near Phi Phi Island. This was a lot of fun, and made even more fun with the use of a cheap one-use underwater camera! You can buy these cameras inexpensively, while they dont take fantastic shots, they are still pretty good fun!All these pics were taken snorkelling off Phi Phi Island on this day trip.

Exploring Thailand in a month with a few sidetrips

by seagypsy

Thanks for more details. With a month, you could do a lot just in Thailand alone but it will still go by fairly quickly. If you want to get certified with an open water course, then I'd suggest Ko Phi Phi Don on the Andaman Coast off Krabi but Ko Tao is where many flock to get certified because it's cheaper though not as beautiful as the Phi Phi islands. The Similan offer some of the best diving in the world BUT is best reserved for when you've got more experience since some of the currents are quite strong for drift diving. And I would also recommend some trekking in the north but instead of heading to Pai and Mae Hong Son, perhaps further north from Chiang Mai to Fang or Thaton but coming to northern Laos would also be good (and also a fast and inexpensive way to southern China/Yunnan).If you've got a week to spare then I'd recommend a sidetrip to neighboring Cambodia with a budget flight...
